Adaptions you'd like to see

[personal profile] philstar22 2021-05-08 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some things you'd love to see adapted (or adapted again if they've been adapted already?

I already submitted a secret about this, but I just finished reading Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom and I wish Netflix had chosen these books to adapt rather than Shadow and Bone. It's just got so much more of the stuff I like: criminal underworld, thieves with hearts of gold, a big heist, mini cons and long cons, revenge, found family...

The Crows are part of the series! They’re the best part, IMO.

Since the animated Dragonlance was so bad that my friends who saw me BEGGED me not to watch it, having a good version of that (animated or live action, either could work with a good director) would be awfully nice.

I'd love to see an adaption of anything by Brandon Sanderson, but especially the Mistborn Trilogy.

I'd love to see a movie of one of Guy Gavriel Key's books, because all the ones I've read are great and each seem really unique and have good worldbuilding.

I think the Riftwar books could make a great tv series.

And I'd love to see an adaption of Mary Stewart's version of the Merlin story.

I want to see a Wicked type version of the Jungle Book where Shere Khan is the hero.

The Hobbit. They messed it up imo. I want a better version.

In case any of you haven't noticed yet I'm the Ouran Host Club anon and I'd love to watch a faithful anime adaptation of the manga now that it's finished. :(

Game of Thrones once the books are completed and released. If this thinking could get any more wishful, it'd be a fucking water fountain full of coins from the 1900s.

I've always thought Harry Potter would make a great TV series. Seven seasons - one per book.

I'd also love a Captive Prince TV series.

Well, if you're offering...I'll take a redo of the Assassin's Creed movie where they scrap the modern day stuff and just focus on the historical stuff please.

The Queen's Thief series! If I can't have the whole thing, I'll accept just King of Attolia. It's a) the best book, and b) has probably the best POV character to jump in on the series blind with. Costis perpetually has no idea what's going on, so the viewers can figure it out along with him.

I think I'd like to see a Koudelka adaptation. Why not? It's a short, contained story, and that could work well as a movie, or heck, a stage play. The game's fixed camera cutscenes pulled from local irl acting pool, making the whole thing feel like a stage play in the first place.

My answer probably won't ever change unless it actually happens... Guillermo del Toro's version of The Phantom of the Opera. ALW version or book adaptation, idc.

Although so long as I'm dreaming, have him steal the dragon bits from Kay and have dragon-riding dream sequences. Because if anyone could make that not utterly ridiculous, del Toro could.

HBO TV miniseries of Little, Big. Just pure lavish, lush, high-production-value midcentury American fairy tale magical realism. It would be fucking amazing, they'd win a million awards. It's such an obvious idea.

A decent version of A Wizard of Earthsea by someday willing to put in the cinematography work to bring in the elemental nature of the sea - and the cliffs of Gont and the fog, the winds and the flights of dragons and birds. And to let the dialogue in the books actually sing as it's written instead of hacking it down.

It's such a vivid book. How did people fuck it up so badly?

(I have mixed feelings about the Studio Ghibli movie. I think it's a good movie in its own right it just... left out a lot of the stuff I really loved in the course of making its own story.)

A REALLY TRUE TO THE STORY adaptation (miniseries!!) of Tanith Lee's 'Don't Bite the Sun' and 'Drinking Sapphire Wine'. Only with the same-sex and poly relationships way more to the front instead of mostly hinted around at.

Because holy fuck, that would be so fun.

Vorkosigan Saga and Chalion books both feel incredibly obvious to me as TV series. But I guess they're more in the adventure / light-hearted vibe, and TV studios more want the epic, serious vibe? IDK. I still think it would be great. Who knows, maybe the Wheel of Time series will be a smash hit and Chalion will be next after that.

I believe they are actually making a Rivers of London adaptation, so strike that one from my list, I guess.

An actually GOOD TV series adaptation of the Dresden Files (filmed in Chicago, please)

Film version of The City We Became

Beautiful animated adaptation of any key story from the Silmarillion (think Studio Ghibli or Secret of Kells style)

Still want an Asimov movie or tv adaptation with a faithful Susan Calvin - generally middle-agd or older; intelligent and decisive; driven to understand and predict robot-human interactions; deep affection for and protective of robots, living a life revolved around them, which often blinkers her to human needs or connections but doesn’t blind her to human safety (though she still might take a robot’s side); and even if she doesn’t like a person, is always willing to listen to or work with one who says there’s an issue with a robot (though she’ll be snarky or prickly about it). And really written as a - or the - main protagonist.
