I bet the channels that are showing procedural are all just showing the same reruns of Law and Order and have no need of the hassle or expense of making a new thing.

Like, we'll probably never get another work-place sitcom because people can just re-watch the Office for the rest of forever.

100000%

also procedural mysteries that aren't police procedurals.

I miss Cold Case. :(
Sure, the cases weren't as good in the later seasons - mostly because of budget reasons - but no other show has ever touched its place in my heart.

To a lesser extend I also miss Without a Trace. It was so nice that sometimes those stories had a good end, you know?

omg I had almost forgotten about Cold Case - no show had ever made me cry like that show. I always got so emotional after watching it lol.

I think what I like about Cold Case is in retrospect, this is a division devoted to going back over cases and reexamining biases or threads of evidence. And I can still get behind that even now.

Cold Case had a great audio choice person! The songs chosen really (quite often,) made the scene!

Nope. Procedural stories are boring trash and I'm glad they've fallen out of favor. If you want everything to be the same forever go watch some sitcoms.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-15 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, all those famous sitcoms about a group of misfits solving crimes in fun ways.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-15 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That's such a strange and funny thing to think

Like, why are series where everything is the same forever fine for comedy but not OK for drama? It just seems like such an arbitrary line to draw

Sometimes I wonder if people are deliberately being assholes, or if they genuinely don't know they're being an asshole.

About a 50-50 split around here.

I solidly agree with the gist of what you're saying, but wow you sure are being an ass in how you're saying it.

I like procedural shows, too, but learning about how detectives and forensics really works (and seeing all the 'character a breaks the law and does stupid/violent/gross things to solve crime with no repercussions) kinda made them more 'meh' for me.

Plus, always too much drama-llama and romance stuff on top of and sometimes *instead of* the actual crime solving part.

I don't care too much about police procedurals in particular, but I do wish more shows would have stand-alone episodes again. Obviously character development etc would carry over, no need for a big reset button every ep, but a plot that starts and ends within the same ep would be nice.

I like serialization, but it does make re-watching stuff difficult. Fandom is different too, since people often hold off on writing fic until the big arc is over.

I agree. I feel like series that are more focused on "Monster of the Week" with the season arc peppered in here and there, it makes you really anticipate those episodes that are entirely focused on the season arc. You know something BIG is gonna happen. Whereas when the show focuses almost entirely on the season arc, something BIG has to happen EVERY episode and then it starts to get melodramatic and it always feels like it's very close to jumping the shark.

I love CSI (up until Warrick died) and CSI:NY but there are only a couple of characters on those shows I would call misfits.

Honestly learning about real police and how awful they are just made procedurals unwatchable to me for the most part. 911 I enjoy, though, because it is so absurd that I can divorce it from real police. If you are looking for procedurals, I think both 911 shows fit the bill.

I like medical shows that have a similar setup, though. Cases of the week along with some story arcs but every episode with a different thing.

I'm interested to see what they do with this new Law and Order show that will focus on defense attorneys.

I want more PI procedurals, but i only want police procedurals if they're reruns of Columbo and Cold Case.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-16 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
I fin procedurals comforting and they work for me when serialised tv doesn't, so I feel you. I'm currently going through Vera and it's working pretty well for me.

or like something focused on solving actual mystery and not on drama in the group?? And please no saving the city, the country, the world!!
On this round of quarantine, i just read the whole Agatha Cristie.
