I think this is mostly true in general of media made for kids and young adults, and I'm consistently baffled why things like that seem to constantly get, not just crossover fans, but huge, dominant fandoms including large numbers of adults

But it'd be a funny old world if we were all the same I guess

The unpopular but true answer is that a lot of hardcore fandom cannot bring themselves to engage in anything more complex than children's media.

the other answer is that there's a lot of teens in fandom these days, and since they were closer to the age demo SU targeted, they liked it as a result of that. it's no more different than anime fandoms in the west having a lot of younger folks in them.
