Yes to everything. It would've been more satisfying by a long shot.

Btw, the thing about Phoenix and Maya getting chased by magic bird wizard things and then getting slurped up into a book in the very beginning of the game? The ending spoilers answers nothing about that. Just say it's magic, and go.

I think it might have been Layton and Luke who dealt with the witches in the beginning, and the illusion was sold only because they had the cover of night. As for Phoenix and Maya, I just assumed they hallucinated due to the ink, blacked out and then were captured. But even that seems flimsy given the other details of the game.
