(That's why people from troubled homes and environment are more likely to commit crimes and the such).

you're REALLY overgeneralizing here. most of the nicest, kindest people I've meet in my life came from troubled and even exteremely abusive environments.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Statistically, coming from a particular background puts you at-risk for commiting crime.

Re: 110

[identity profile] noni-moon.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
true. I'm merely talking about personal experiences here, but the way she stated her opinion pretty much felt like : 'environment is everything! all humans are inhertaily evil! therefore anyone who comes from a troubled environment is SURELY to turn criminal!', which just.. buged me :/

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, of course, it bugged me too.

Re: 110

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I never said that, I said if left alone, it can do some nasty things.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Abuse can do nasty things to people! But not for the reasons you suggest.

Re: 110

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Guess what, it happens because doesn't know it's a wrong thing to do. And why it can continue from generation to generation.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that is indeed a reasonable conclusion to come to. What you've failed to consider is the fact that that pattern does not typify all abuse, forever, and that it also often doesn't continue.

Re: 110

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
...that it also often doesn't continue.

It only ends if the abused learned that it's not acceptable. I never said it continues on forever and forever in every single case, it can pass generation to generation because they don't know it's wrong to do and that's a fact.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
No, but you still haven't said anything about abuse that springs out of non-abusive environments.

Re: 110

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
What? The parent would have emotional or psychological problems, or never learned it's wrong or learned it was okay.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
So you really think that child abuse is as simple as "they never learned it was wrong," and if someone came up to them and told them it was wrong, that would magically fix the problem?

lolstrawman

Re: 110

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Some cases it can, sometimes you have to show them how it's affecting their child, or losing their children to Child Services or a trip to the slammer might do it. It can vary person to person. But it's best if they're young to stop it from passing on to their kids.

Re: 110

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Note: Most likely.

Most likely leaves a possibility that they won't BE that way. It's not news that criminals usually come from a troubled background.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but your theory is still unsubstantiated garbage.

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2009-02-04 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Just like the "intuitive" idea that something as illogical as free will exists!

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
If you think you were actually having a logical conversation, you're wrong. I gave you plenty of logical considerations. What you're doing is defending a viewpoint, not considering a viewpoint, and you'll do that through any means necessary.

Also, intuition is hella useful. There's no reason to put it in quotation marks, as if it's an absurd way to understand the universe. Fuck, it's a built-in human method for interfacing with the world, why wouldn't you use it to argue the way in which the universe works?

Re: 110

Hey, I'm only saying what I studied for in college.

You majored in offensive oversimplification?

Re: 110

No, Psychology. Take that if you will.
