Personally, I think all humans are inherently evil. We only learn kindness and good from others, mainly your parents (that's why role models are very important). Failure to do that can result in disaster more often than not. That's why people from troubled homes and environment are more likely to commit crimes and the such.

However, it is still a choice in the end of the day, unless you have a psychological condition that makes you unable to make sound decisions. It still frustrates me when people go around and say "I didn't know this person was capable of doing this!" Everyone is very capable to commit crimes, especially when it's in a group-pack mentality.

Even if a person with a very troubled background commits a crime, they still have to own up. It's tragic, but they abused their free will. Remember, there are people who managed to overcome those odds as well.

Whoa, chill, did you read the rest of my post?

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I did. It's still fucking absurd. There are all kinds of good reasons to believe that people are "evil" in that they will always act in their own self-interest. THAT is not a good one.

Re: 110

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
That's why we learn that acting in our self interest is not the way to go. Humans aren't naturally altruistic beings, in fact we're quite selfish, we have to learn what is and is not appropriate. By the time we become to a stage that we can start reasoning somewhat for ourselves, we should have an idea what to do and not to do based on those very lessons our role models (and society) instill in us.

Sorry, if you think environment doesn't have a hand, I don't know what you tell you.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Of course I think environment has a hand. I also think that you're full of shit when you say that the reason kids with messed up families are messed up is because everyone's innately evil, so it only makes sense. Do you even think about the implications of that? Do you have anything to substantiate that other than the fact that environment matters? Christ.

I don't care if you don't think people are very nice (though you might want to think about that one a little more, because if we're all little devils then what do we care about learning to be nice to eachother?), but I can't understand how you can spout such crap about the trouble with abused kids and expect not to be called on it.

Re: 110

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, I did not say that? I don't know where you came up with that. I said that people are inherently evil, and if they don't learn what's good or not, they tend to cause crimes. It is because we learn what is right or wrong is why everyone is not killing everyone over every single thing.

Why you do think kids get abused? The parent didn't learn that it wasn't okay, only repeated what they know from personal experience of being abused themselves. Does it excuse the behavior? No. Some learn not to do it and don't abuse their children at all. That's why psychologists put some emphasis in that when reviewing abuse cases.

People learn how to be nice because it benefits more all around. I mean, would you hang out with a completely selfish person or a nice one?

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
You're assuming that people from abusive families are unable to determine what's good, which is pretty stupid and backwards. It's just as likely that constant exposure to terrible things WILL teach you what's bad and why you shouldn't act exclusively in your own self interest.

Why you do think kids get abused? The parent didn't learn that it wasn't okay, only repeated what they know from personal experience of being abused themselves.

So every case of abuse in the world is perpetuated by someone who has been abused? I really don't think the facts add up, there.

People learn how to be nice because it benefits more all around. I mean, would you hang out with a completely selfish person or a nice one?

If everyone is evil, then who really cares? There's no point.

People who do abuse who do it because they determined it's okay or, in a extremely twisted sense, think it's actually good. It usually takes an outside influence to make them realize that abuse is not okay because children has a very unfortunate way to make it seem like it's their fault or normalize it.

So every case of abuse in the world is perpetuated by someone who has been abused? I really don't think the facts add up, there.
Or raised with the belief it's okay. More often than not, abusers were the abused at a certain point in their life. I've seen it, living in one of the worst ghettos in the 1990's, where people thought it was okay to beat your kid, even to the point that they brag about it was the same for them. If we're going to base the world, how about abuse and honor killing among the very few extremist Islamic sects? They're raised with the belief that it's alright to do that, even it's a good thing to do for honor.

If everyone is evil, then who really cares? There's no point.
It wouldn't benefit no one and chaos would reign if we didn't try to curb it. To do/be good and whatnot is a habit we have to learn to function although it can be a hard thing to do sometimes.

(That's why people from troubled homes and environment are more likely to commit crimes and the such).

you're REALLY overgeneralizing here. most of the nicest, kindest people I've meet in my life came from troubled and even exteremely abusive environments.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Statistically, coming from a particular background puts you at-risk for commiting crime.

Re: 110

[identity profile] noni-moon.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
true. I'm merely talking about personal experiences here, but the way she stated her opinion pretty much felt like : 'environment is everything! all humans are inhertaily evil! therefore anyone who comes from a troubled environment is SURELY to turn criminal!', which just.. buged me :/

Re: 110

I never said that, I said if left alone, it can do some nasty things.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Abuse can do nasty things to people! But not for the reasons you suggest.

Re: 110

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Guess what, it happens because doesn't know it's a wrong thing to do. And why it can continue from generation to generation.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that is indeed a reasonable conclusion to come to. What you've failed to consider is the fact that that pattern does not typify all abuse, forever, and that it also often doesn't continue.

Note: Most likely.

Most likely leaves a possibility that they won't BE that way. It's not news that criminals usually come from a troubled background.

Re: 110

Yeah, but your theory is still unsubstantiated garbage.

Re: 110

Just like the "intuitive" idea that something as illogical as free will exists!

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
If you think you were actually having a logical conversation, you're wrong. I gave you plenty of logical considerations. What you're doing is defending a viewpoint, not considering a viewpoint, and you'll do that through any means necessary.

Also, intuition is hella useful. There's no reason to put it in quotation marks, as if it's an absurd way to understand the universe. Fuck, it's a built-in human method for interfacing with the world, why wouldn't you use it to argue the way in which the universe works?
