Are the Ace Ventura movies why Jim Carrey is problematic or has he done something more recently that's also bad?

Pretty sure he was one of the early supporters for the anti-vaccine movement.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-22 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
He's an anti-vaxxer.

I mean the Ace Ventura movies also aren't great

Although there are parts I do still find funny, I agree that the rest have definitely not aged well.

The ending of the first movie went over my head for years as a kid, up until I hit my 20s and realized the transphobia there.

Sure, but in the same vein that a lot of 90s comedy wasn't great. Singling out Jim Carrey specifically as the problematic element there would just be stupid.

Ace Ventura was particularly bad even at the time, though. The first was basically just an extended lead-up to an insanely transphobic punchline, and the second was Racism: The Movie. They're not the only problematic movies from the 90s, of course, but they are very, very representative of them, to the point that I'd call them the poster children for Yikes media.

Aside from the transphobia, Ace Ventura was a grown man who acted like a 12 year old boy and got away with it, so...

But again... that was every comedy lead in the 90's? And a good many of them even nowadays. Hardly a Jim Carrey problem specifically.
