I adore this episode and I definitely think the TARDIS understands everything the Doctor says and sometimes responds in her own way.

My poor girl was miserable the entire car ride. She got sick in the last half hour. And she was super nervous for the first hour we were here at the new place, cowering in the closet of my room.

Then birds started chirping in the window. Now she's glued to the window. She's also gone around the house to all the other windows before coming back to this one. She's still clearly not her full self, but right now her total focus is on those birds. I guess windows and the birds in them can speak to kitties anywhere in the world.

Um, I think that this case, at least for me, is there is verrrry little representation of Jews in media that's not immediate glossed over (character mentions chanukah once and never any other indication) or used as humor in a bit of a stereotype. Like, this is kinda the latter, but it's still very clear he adored her, and of course we're going to latch onto that with a lack of representation.

I've only watched Trek as an adult so it's pretty recent for me, but I've thought about this as well when watching Voyager. I usually wonder how Kes might have developed if she had stayed in the show instead of Neelix. Personally, as much as I disliked Neelix at first I ended up liking him eventually, not as much as other characters on the show but I definitely enjoyed his dynamic with Tuvok and Naomi Wildman. Maybe the same thing would've happened if Kes had stayed, but we'll never know :/

Pretty big difference between identifying with fictional characters intended as representation, and identifying with a dude's real-life relationship with someone you've never seen or met or engaged with in any way at all except through his own perfomative* accounts.

(*performative as in 'part of a performance', i.e., his stand-up, not intended derogatorily).
