I've only watched Trek as an adult so it's pretty recent for me, but I've thought about this as well when watching Voyager. I usually wonder how Kes might have developed if she had stayed in the show instead of Neelix. Personally, as much as I disliked Neelix at first I ended up liking him eventually, not as much as other characters on the show but I definitely enjoyed his dynamic with Tuvok and Naomi Wildman. Maybe the same thing would've happened if Kes had stayed, but we'll never know :/

I love Jeri Ryan & Seven but it's so clear that their thought process was "We can't possibly write storylines for two beautiful blonde women" and it's total BS.

another who was an adult (tho 20s) when Voyager first aired and I couldn't stand Kes once she reached "adulthood" for her species, and I think it was 100000% her "I have superpowers that no one else in my species has, I'm special and I have to train with Tuvok to prove it" thing. I think it would have been more interesting if either she was totally normal and they just had to deal, writing-wise, with "what happens if we get approved to go more than 8 seasons and she literally ages and dies normally?" or, conversely, having superpowers was normal for her species and once she approached Tuvok with "this is how my people are, I'm away from my people so I need a surrogate guru" from the start, the rest of her development was natural.

but then, I also knew her leaving was due to the actress wanting out from the get-go so having to write a character out due to such circumstances is so fucking obvious that it sort of ruins the story no matter which angle you go with. mostly I just hated that she was the special snowflake bordering on Mary Sue in order to come up with some sort of special write-off versus just killing her off in a random attack. I would much prefer if an actor needs to or wants to leave, just killing off the character. I've done enough panfandom RP to know that abruptly losing someone due to expected circumstances is far more impactful to the remaining characters than building up some convoluted extra thing that justifies why they need to leave.

I don't think the actress wanted out. From what I've heard/read, they originally were going to keep both women and get rid of Harry, but then Harry's popularity spiked briefly due to the actor being put in People's Sexiest Men Alive issue over the summer. So they got rid of Kes instead.

It's been a long time since I watched Voyager properly, in fact it was probably the original run so when that ended I was still in my teens. But the way I remember it is that they got to a point where they clearly didn't know what else to do with her so just wrote her out using convenient established character points. And yeah, that always sucks. I suspect the short-life span for her species probably hampered them too.

Another comment touches on the actress wanting out and I find it interesting Kes got some super-elaborate send off whereas in TNG Yar is killed in a pretty anti-climactic way by what my younger self deemed a bin-bag monster. Not strictly comparing the two. But I do wonder if the decisions with Kes were influenced by the backlash to that. Hmm.

I figure with Yar since it was still the first season of TNG - and while Star Trek was established as franchise by then, it was far from certain that bringing Trek back as live-action TV with new characters was going to be successful in the long run - they probably weren't worried about making it a big thing.

I don't really have your faith that that's what would have happened. Character work was never Voyager's forté.
