another who was an adult (tho 20s) when Voyager first aired and I couldn't stand Kes once she reached "adulthood" for her species, and I think it was 100000% her "I have superpowers that no one else in my species has, I'm special and I have to train with Tuvok to prove it" thing. I think it would have been more interesting if either she was totally normal and they just had to deal, writing-wise, with "what happens if we get approved to go more than 8 seasons and she literally ages and dies normally?" or, conversely, having superpowers was normal for her species and once she approached Tuvok with "this is how my people are, I'm away from my people so I need a surrogate guru" from the start, the rest of her development was natural.

but then, I also knew her leaving was due to the actress wanting out from the get-go so having to write a character out due to such circumstances is so fucking obvious that it sort of ruins the story no matter which angle you go with. mostly I just hated that she was the special snowflake bordering on Mary Sue in order to come up with some sort of special write-off versus just killing her off in a random attack. I would much prefer if an actor needs to or wants to leave, just killing off the character. I've done enough panfandom RP to know that abruptly losing someone due to expected circumstances is far more impactful to the remaining characters than building up some convoluted extra thing that justifies why they need to leave.

I don't think the actress wanted out. From what I've heard/read, they originally were going to keep both women and get rid of Harry, but then Harry's popularity spiked briefly due to the actor being put in People's Sexiest Men Alive issue over the summer. So they got rid of Kes instead.
