All the projecting people are doing onto this dude and his relationships is deeply weird and uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, I think that this case, at least for me, is there is verrrry little representation of Jews in media that's not immediate glossed over (character mentions chanukah once and never any other indication) or used as humor in a bit of a stereotype. Like, this is kinda the latter, but it's still very clear he adored her, and of course we're going to latch onto that with a lack of representation.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty big difference between identifying with fictional characters intended as representation, and identifying with a dude's real-life relationship with someone you've never seen or met or engaged with in any way at all except through his own perfomative* accounts.

(*performative as in 'part of a performance', i.e., his stand-up, not intended derogatorily).

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
they're not fictional characters???

they're real people, of course they're not going to be able to hold up to some fantasy ideal people put on their heads because they're not constructs controlled and made by others. god this whole using real people as 'representation' is so fucking weird. that's not what anyone exists for.

and idc about this dude btw, what;'s happening to them seems sad but it's THEIR business, not everyone else's, but jesus people are getting so bent out of shape over it. he's a real person and is messy, welcome to reality.

AYRT

But all this is is someone saying they're kinda sad about it? Like, my feelings about it are like OP's. I know it's stupid that I cared a bit about this.

Okay but urgh, it's really in poor taste to make this even remotely about representations of Jews in the media. I agree with the sentiment in the first comment. Goddamn we really need to rein ourselves in when it comes to celebrities, like yikes.

Jfc just go watch the Nanny

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Like I don't know the details behind his divorce, but the discussions and the parasocialness going on with him and her are just... a little much for me.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's sooooo weird to be happy when someone famous speaks well of a frequently maligned minority group you belong to. Like, ugh! So freaky to enjoy positivity like that! What a sick puppy.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[stares]

That... is not what AYRT is bothered by? Wtf.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it? That's what the OP is expressing, and it's what that anon was responding to.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, that anon didn't sound like they were replying directly to OP's secret but more the weird and overly obsessive sounding people (see above) that seem weirdly over-invested in the relationships of a guy who has publicly said at one point how much he loved his wife.

(I use past-tense but he may still love her, I have no idea, I know of the guy in passing but haven't seen more than a few clips so I haven't seen any of his bits about his wife).

Personally I do think it's weird to hang one's self-worth on anything a famous person has to say. Like, that is a major aspect of celeb culture that wigs me out.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but yeah. Like someone said above, this isn't "representation". I understand wanting to see people like you in media, but these are REAL people. It's just super weird to me.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Feeling happy isn't the same thing as hanging one's self worth on a celebrity's words, though.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
They're real fucking people. This isn't about your Representation. I say this as a minority, this is on par with lesbians whining about Elliot Page being "stolen" from us.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-24 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhhhhh there is a BIG difference in saying, "Wow, I'm more bummed than I thought I would be about a guy who loudly made note in his art about how much he adored his Jewish wife getting divorced because it was just nice to see a positive, loving representation when usually you only hear negative "Jewish wife" stereotypes" and a lesbian saying "Wow, if someone is a trans man, he's no longer in my identity group--so trans people stole this from me!"

I say this as a queer person, though I'm not Jewish.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, anon. You get it. I feel like some people are reading a bit too much into this secret. I liked the bit about loving his Jewish wife. I was sad when they divorced because I liked that bit. Then I felt stupid because I shouldn't care about someone's divorce I don't know personally.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
As a gay: I get what it's like to be marginialized, but treating REAL FUCKING PEOPLE like representation is going a bit far.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-05-24 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Who the hell is supposed to do the representing if it's not real people?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, you're fine. It's just that some assholes here like to pretend like it's weird and unnatural have any opinions or feelings about famous people. Good ones, bad ones, it's all the same to them.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-05-23 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly as someone who's commented a couple times in this thread, I had no issues with OP's secret. It was a simple, "Damn it was nice, I am sad." it's the people who were derailing this into a conversation about 'representation' (which is a super weird way to talk about a real life relationship) that some of us had issues with.

New Anon Here:

Like, bringing up how much he loved his wife was a noticeable part of his work. If we want to we might as well call his comedy RPF of himself, his family, and the people he knows because we're reaching like giraffes tonight.
