Part one of this secret: Cool, cool, I get it, do you, etc.

Part two of this secret: Faking comments on fics you didn't even read because you're just that selfish and desperate for people to validate your shit? First of all, that's sad. Second of all, ew, fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-26 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's weird but it's also extremely pro-social so idk

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Iawtc. OP is an asshole.

You're being really weird about this and I'm guessing you're one of the anons who has a psychological hangup where fic comments are concerned. In the grand scheme of things, this ranks somewhere between "Of course your ass doesn't look fat in those jeans" and "Thanks, Aunt Gertie, I always wanted a crocheted tablet cozy" as far as self-serving dishonesty goes.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
...ech, whatever, as long as I don't know that their comment was made without reading, I'll enjoy it. So just make sure it's generic enough, OP.

I do the first half of this whenever I join a new fandom. I can't read once I start writing because I feel like I might unintentionally borrow something and then be pointed at as a plagiarizer. Although logically I know this isn't true, and I've even had close fandom friends say as much to me, my brain still goes there.

I don't however do the second part and I think you should quit doing it too.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the anon above me, I stop reading fic while I’m working on a new project because I don’t want to accidentally plagiarize someone. One of my favorite authors wrote a fic starring my favorite OTP in a similar plot as the one I was working on and it was excruciating not being able to read it because I was so afraid of copying her (my fic ended up going in an entirely different direction than hers).

I do go back to reading fic when I’m done posting mine. And if I like it enough, I’ll comment, but I never expect anybody to read my fic just because I commented on theirs.

I’m not sure why you’re getting so much flack for the second part of your secret. Is it dishonest? Well yeah, but it’s not like any of these authors would know you left them a comment just so they’d check out your work.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-26 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as your comments sound genuine, I’m sure they make the authors very happy.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
jeez, people fake reading fics so that others will read their own fics? It's probably happened before - but reading that is kind of depressing. It's like between this and certain people's desperation to become a big name in the fandom... idk it just feels like it goes against the spirit of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Agree completely.

Self-serving dishonesty was a description used above, and that's exactly what this is.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
+10000000

This kind of social-climbing fakery is just...wtf, people really do that? In fandom of all places? Jesus.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I have a response secret.

I'll check out a commenter's fic...if the comment is really detailed about what they liked about mine, showing that they have a similar philosophy.

Yours probably aren't, though.

Big yeah on the first part of this secret. It started when I got brave enough to start writing in Trek fandom finally - TOS/AOS fandom is so huge that I was sure anything I wanted to write had already been written years ago and probably better, and if I went looking for fic about the things I like and thus wanted to write about, I might subconsciously steal things from other people's fic that is better than mine, etc... At one point I was writing a huge 100,000 word epic and it kept getting compared to another one that someone else had written recently with similar themes and I was freaking out about what if I really WAS subconsciously copying them? So nope. No reading anything else until I was done with that story. ...And maybe the sequel.

...Ten years later, I still have to kind of force myself to read things in even the one tiny fandom I'm still active in, even though there's barely any of it and never about the characters I write. But when it actually exists and I do make myself read it, my comments/kudos/enjoyment is absolutely genuine.

I'm the opposite. I read fics for inspiration when I'm in the writing zone. However, there are certain authors I avoid in the Tolkien fandom especially when I'm writing because how they interpret Sauron and Melkor and their relationship is so antithetical to how I see them.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I usually write fic before I read them, so when I start reading a fic with a similar premise to ones I've published or am currently writing, I start getting nervous at comparisons. I do find it easier to write fic when I'm not reading and vice versa, but I'm continually doing both, often times one more than the other.

Second part, you do you, OP, but FTR when ppl comment on my fics I tend not to read their stuff. Granted, I don't get a lot of comments on my fics and I'm not too fussed over comments (but they are nice to receive!) so...

I just don't see how your second part could be efficient or effective enough to keep doing it. Do you see numbers OP? Do you mention your fic or writing in the comment?

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
In a small fandom everyone knows each other more or less so not participating in fandom gets noticed. Regarding the numbers, I'd say I get more comments and the same amount of reads.

I do everything in this secret except for copying other reviews. I do comment in hopes that an author will like me back, as sad as others may find it, but it's after I read the story. To be honest, I hardly have the energy to read stuff lately though.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 05:20 am (UTC)(link)

I don't think the "sad" part is the hoping other people will R&R your stuff in return thing. I think it's the lying to them about having read their fic because you want them to R&R yours thing.

Wanting validation isn't sad or bad. Being fake and dishonest to other people in order to get validation from them is really sucky though. IMO.

I don't care what the other commenters say. This is the funniest secret. Playing chess moves with comments like that is far too much effort put into what is at most, a quick affirmation when you even get it, which you won't at least half the time.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Fun twist: The others don't read OP's fic either, but just copy a comment to do their "duty" in this comment-for-comment exchange game.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been known to happen. Someone commented on my two part fic as if it were 2 separate fics. I had a good laugh and thanked them without mentioning anything.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-27 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I do the opposite as far as reading goes. I read a ton of fic and then get irked at bad characterization and tropes and end up writing something that's totally the opposite of what everyone else is doing.
