Wait is it the same characters across different campaigns, or have these people been running this same campaign for years?

(Anonymous) 2021-05-28 03:24 am (UTC)(link)I'm relieved the feed I was getting S1 from broke. I didn't like the characters very much and one of the ladies just screams all the time and it hurts and makes me jump. Nobody seems very nice and it's all just generic fantasy and wish fulfillment stuff. It's... fine, but idk why it's a big deal. I really tried to like it.

First off, try one of their one shots or a few of the one shots or undeadwood that only has a few episodes. See if you like the way these people play before you commit. Most of the one shots have people who aren't Matt running things but it's a good way to get a feel for the group dynamics.
Second, don't start with campaign one. Campaign one is a home game that was put on the internet as an experiment in the early days of twitch. It starts off in the middle of a campaign that they'd been playing for years at home. There are lots of audio issues. And at one point you lose a player due to interpersonal conflict off screen. (And he was cheating at the table.) Campaign two is wrapping up now and campaign three will start soon-ish. I'd watch one of those first. I fully recommend doing campaign 2 before campaign 1. Campaign one is great but if I hadn't been invested in how these people play this game before I tried to listen I wouldn't have made it through the technical issues.
Third, episodes are usually 3 or 4 hours long with some closer to 5 or 6. That's a lot of narrative to listen to. There is a break at some point in the episode so the players can use the bathroom and refill their drinks. I've listened to many an episode over two or three days.
Fourth, you used the podcast image in the secret. I tossed it up on youtube while I did stuff around the house or was laid out on the couch with a migraine. Not!secret- watching people play d&d can get boring sometimes. Have other stuff you're doing while listening to it.

How do you eat a whale? One bite at a time.
So, one episode at a time, whenever you feel like it. Next thing you know, you're caught up.
Otherwise, yeah, long running podcasts can get overwhelming with the sheer number of episodes. (I'm looking at you, Welcome to Nightvale.)
