Can you slip some of the food beneath the mask and chew? That's what I did last year while eating breakfast on a ferry: slipped part of the granola bar underneath, and then the straw from my water bottle.

You're totally fine. Most places right now have it set up like this: they have tables spaced out and a little sign on that you flip, telling them if it's been sanitized or not. If it's like a cafe, wear your mask when you're at the counter, if it's a restaurant, wear it when the server is at your table (I think a lot of people don't do this but I think it shows you respect the server and extra safety is good). Technically you can have the mask completely off while seated (and that's been allowed since before vaccines) but personally I feel safer with it on unless I have my food. But if you are still uncomfortable...well, that's totally understandable.
