The pattern for racists seems to be “I care about my ingroup, so a black person in my ingroup can convince me to stop looking down on black people.” (Sometimes. If you’re lucky.) I haven’t seen someone start caring about other people when they start from a point of not caring about anyone at all.

Eh, half my family are very racist and their pattern is "I still hate black people but THIS ONE is an exception and I won't act racist around her because she would be upset." While still linking BNP posts on Facebook.
