I've been thinking about this exact subject all week; it's incredible how not-chill fandom and online in general (and offline!), truly is now. There's so many bitter people who are apparently allergic to fun and will be downright mean to total strangers over absolutely nothing. Anyway, I just, I don't know, it doesn't balance anything out but I hope everyone that reads this post has a good day and if it wasn't a good day today, I hope everyone has a better one tomorrow.

Everyone joining social media was a massive shift in how everything in society was organized and how communications and human interaction works and it took place only like a decade ago (in the United States at least; 40% of the US population joined social media between 2006 and 2010) so in some ways it's not surprising that it would be really hard for people to figure out how that works. We're basically in a whole new world. We're still sorting out all of the details of what that looks like. Nobody really knows what the fuck is going on.

I think this is also one of the reasons that the generational split in America right now is so big - essentially, there were two huge breakpoints right around 2007/2008, a financial breakpoint with the recession and a social-technological breakpoint with social media, and so one of the really big dividing lines in America is basically: were your social habits, economic status, and general worldview and outlook on life firmly established by roughly 2008, or were they not? And that's why there's some really significant demographic differences between people who are under 40 right now (they were in their late 20s at most in 2008) and people who are over 50 (they were in their late 30s), with people in their 40s falling either way depending on their particular circumstances - obviously this is all a statistical generation but there are a lot of demographic trends that break right around that point.

Not being a dick isn't all that complicated.

This is an interesting comment, and you make a good point.

I definitely think that platform formats have A LOT to do with it - like back in the day on sites like Livejournal, you had to actually be apart of the fandom communities in order to see works/discussions/etc.
Whereas with sites like twitter and tumblr, it's never been easier to accidentally come across stuff from other fandoms because one of the people you were following reblogged it - which leads to people who might not like something or understand/misunderstand the fandom source and start to rant about it openly into the tagging system so that people who are just minding their business in fandom end up on the other end of some random person's drama.
