Nah, AYRT has a point. Fandom has a long history of losing all chill and deciding a text is The Worst the moment it starts doing things that obstruct their ship. Which, like, I get where the shippers' disappointment and aggravation is coming from, but it sucks for literally everyone who doesn't ship that pairing and now has to deal with a very vocal contingent of fandom proclaiming how much canon sucks (and/or is homophobic).

Lol you act as if it's not a two way street where fans of the canon ship act like... Well, AYRT about it, smug and presumptuous. And that's the nicer ones. You also have the canon fans who gang up on fans of the non-canon ship to tell them they're promoting abuse and want to be abused in their real relationships and doing their best to bully them out of fandom altogether.
