I can see why people would think that, but (and I'm not going to say "all" because there are always crazies out there) most people who write RPS view it as writing fictional characters anyway. I mean, we work with the "character" that has been created for public consumption.

I guess so. I'm not going to harp on people for writing it - whatever floats peoples' boats, you know? Just sort of weird to me.

That's fair enough. :D

So why is it all celebrities and not your postman, the man in the corner shop or your class teachers? If they're only characters why not any character?

Re: 156

I'm not interested in my postman. I don't go to class so I don't have teachers. The man at the corner shop is totally shippy in that "we're struggling to keep this shop open 7 days a week and it's ruining our marriage but we love each other" kind of way which is adorable, but again, not really interested.

D & JB at work are totally OTP, as are JA & H, and I can see why people would OT3 D, JB & A but I'm not really on board with it myself. Hmm... I'd probably play off D/JB against D/A and JB/A for that angsty goodness what I love so much.

There are plenty of pieces of fiction out there where the author based her characters on people she knew in real life. Hell, Billy Joel's "Piano Man" is RPF in song form, nearly everyone in that song was a real person he met.

The only real difference is name recognition; I could write a series of novels about this guy named John Smith who delivers mail and is a recovering alcoholic and loves dogs, etc. And John Smith really is the guy who delivers my mail and he's a recovering alcoholic who thinks dogs are fab.

And it wouldn't get called "RPF" and be considered subversive and wrong and omg squicky and privacy-invading and illicit; it'd get called fiction and shelved with the other novels at Borders because all it is is doing what authors have done forever, drawing from real life to inspire fiction.

Oh. My. God. This argument pisses me off so much. If you want to write about two people bumping uglies together then just fucking do it and stop making feeble excuses about their 'fictional' characters so that you can distance yourself from what you are doing.

You are taking two real people and treating them like dolls.

I can say from up close and personal experience that the 'fictional' character 'created for public consumption' is no different from the different faces we put on in our lives. We all do it, it's not 'creating a persona' it's just being different aspects of us. You wouldn't behave in front of your grandma like you'd behave in front of your friends. I repeat, I know this from personal experience of more than one person in the public eye.

You are taking two (or more) people and treating them like dolls. You are doing it it for your own fetishization purposes. Don't gussy it up. Be a mensch and say yeah, people may think it's creepy and wrong, but I think it's fucking hot so fuck you. I'd have WAY more respect for you if you did that.

Me? I think about the kids of these people finding explicit porn about their parents on the internet. OP can't understand why that squicks me? Then I don't ever want to know the OP.

THIS.

Re: 156

(Anonymous) 2009-02-07 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
and you couldn't say this with your real username, because...?

Re: 156

(Anonymous) 2009-02-07 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I don't have an lj account. Because I am not using my real name either as I am talking about my own personal experiences with 'famous' people (one of whom, btw has had a character he plays ficced and I am FINE with that) and I have no wish to link this comm or anyone who may read my comment to people I deeply care about.

You can't because?

Re: 156

Eh, I mean, I get why (heaven knows I shipped two of my professors, because they just bantered so much). But fic and such...that creeps me out. Because they're not fictional. Monk is fictional. Tony Shaloub is not. Frodo is fictional. Elijah Wood is not. Treating a real person like a fictional person...Well, for fantasies, I guess most people do it, but writing it down and posting it on the internet...it's just off-putting.

Re: 156

[identity profile] duowolf.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't write or read RPF but I think that in a way the image we have of actors/singers etc is fictonal in a way. We in genral know only the things that are published about them, but not who they really are if that makes any sense at all.
So in a way it's like writing about a fictional character that happens to have the same name as a real person, at least thats how I see it.

Then again I can't read fic based on TV shows/films (live-action) because I see the actors playing the parts and not the characters and it freaks me out a little.
