I don't get it either. To each their own, I guess, but I don't think I've ever heard an anti-RPS argument that either isn't wrong ("it's more illegal than FPF") or doesn't make the arguer sound like they can't separate fantasy from reality.

My, my, aren't we superior today?

I'll tell you my argument. My argument is I have a nephew whose father is famous. And the idea of him accidentally stumbling on fic about his father fucking, being in love with, skipping hand in hand through the daisies with anyone who's not his mother makes my heart hurt. And not to extrapolate that to all RPS/F would make me a hypocrite.

That is neither wrong (unless you consider me wishing to protect my family wrong, in which case I've got nothing to say to you), nor making me unable to separate fantasy from reality.

I'm not sure if I get why someone who doesn't like the concept is guilty of not being able to separate fantasy from reality but those who want fiction of real people are not subject to the same accusation? It is entirely possible to create characters and situations based on real ones that intrigue the writer but not actually co-opt the name and identity of the real person.

I understand that's not going to change your mind and you probably vehemently disagree. But I'd just ask that you consider the argument that the "can't separate fantasy from reality" thing is rather loaded. People having a differing opinion on the subject is not always a matter of them having failings. It's just perspectives.

I didn't say anyone who doesn't like the concept has fantasy/reality issues, but there are a number of "RPF is badbadwrong" arguments that suggest an inability to compartmentalize.

I consider "this is the real person, this is a character based on the real person, they are separate" to be a healthy sense of the separation between fantasy and reality. Arguments like "RPF treats real life people as puppets", however, suggests that someone has trouble with the difference between character and person.

I understand what you're saying. But both times you've indicated many people not getting or liking it may be rooted in a failing on their part. "Unable to separate fantasy from reality", "inability to compartmentalize". I think many people are "able" to do these things, but their beliefs lead them to choose not to separate, not to compartmentalize. That's a valid approach. To feel a certain way can be a valid perspective based on consideration and ideals, not just lacking an "ability" to approach it from the right direction to approve of it.

I hope I'm not coming across as too combative or argumentative. I don't mean to. I can see you're not applying it to everyone globally, and maybe someday you will encounter an argument against RPF that you deem as valid even if you disagree.

I don't think I've ever seen any evidence people who've given me the "these are real people you're turning into puppets"-type argument understand the compartmentalization - I'd like to think if they understood it's something you can do, even if it's not something you should, they wouldn't argue as if it's impossible. I think "I argue as if this is impossible because I believe it's impossible" is a more charitable reading than "I argue as if this is impossible even though I know it's not". But my language may be a little overly broad.

And no, you're not coming across combative at all :)
