but behind the public persona is a real person with thoughts and feelings, who is far more complex than any fictional character could ever hope to be. All that's behind a fictional character is a writer pulling the strings to tell a story. It's not creepy to portray a fictional character doing what you want them to do--they don't have free will, not really. They're puppets. Real people aren't puppets.

I find it interesting that you consider a writer's feelings as insignificant.

Re: 156

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Not insignificant, no, just a drastically different situation. Writers--published writers, at the very least--write for readers. Any writer should know that people are going to feel different ways about certain characters, see characters in ways other than intended, may agree or disagree with how the characters end up with certain people, etc. I'm saying this as someone that's a writer myself.

As a writer, say if I created two guys that are best friends, and by some miracle it's popular enough that fanfiction appears and the two of them get shipped together...I'll probably sigh and roll my eyes and giggle about "those crazy fangirls", but hey, I'm the one that opened it up to the public, I should expect that sort of thing.

It does not mean, however, that just because my name is on a book and I might have some sort of dialogue with fans, that I'd be okay with someone saying I should be dating my best friend, or someone I occasionally hang out with, or my editor or whoever. It also doesn't mean that I'd be at all approving of someone writing out what I'd be like while having sex with one of these people.

Also--as a writer, if I publish a work of fiction, I'm inviting people to make their own judgments on the characters within my books. An actor, however, is not inviting people into their personal lives--and yes, I do feel that relationships are PERSONAL--just because they portray characters in movies and TV and they show up at public events.

But it's not using real people as puppets because I can't do that. I don't have the power to make Jon Bon Jovi do a damn thing, I can't interfere with his free will in any way.

A character is a character. Whatever inspires him, whatever elements are pulled from reality to create him, however closely he resembles a real living breathing person, he is not a living breathing person.

Re: 156

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Then why not write a fictional character? You know, one that isn't blatantly copying a real person?

Re: 156

[identity profile] hector-rashbaum.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Because there are things about the real person that intrigue me enough to want to explore how [that specific combination of personality traits and attitudes and history etc. etc.] would work in [any given plot].

That doesn't mean I can be the puppetmaster of anything but a facsimile.

Re: 156

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Then create a character with certain personality traits, attitudes, etc. You shouldn't have to copy someone's identity perfectly onto a page to do that.

It still feels exploitative and squicky to me.

Re: 156

[identity profile] hector-rashbaum.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
So what, exactly, are people who write FPF doing that is so different from working with an already-existing character who has a specific combination of traits, experience, history, etc.?

Re: 156

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Characters don't exist in the real life. They don't really have emotions or carry on relationships.

Re: 156

[identity profile] hector-rashbaum.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
No, no they don't. I think I already said that, actually.

Re: 156

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2009-02-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
So that's the difference I see, and that's the reason I find it squicky. I'm not telling you to change your hobbies, but I'm certainly not going to change my opinion on it--particularly when squicky things tend to be subjective anyway.
