147. Well, I think that, disturbing as it was, that scene was necessary. Utena's role as "the hero" wouldn't have been as poignant if her values were never shaken. She had to fall down hard - and then rise again. I'm a bit on the fence about the ending - her death would give the story some kind of closure, but I think the point of it was of having no closure; that's not the end, it's the beginning of life in "the real world". I think the movie, cracktastic as it was, made a clearer statement in this respect.
(besides, I loved her pointless blabber throughout the whole episode - pre sex and DURING the sex, and then the sudden silence in the car. It shows her anxiety and immaturity about it, which is, for once in that show, appropriate for a 14 years old.)

Oh, definitely. That scene played a critical role in the series and Utena never would have had the impact that it did on me. The fact that it broke my heart to see her fall was what made it so strong.

I know, right? That's one of my favorite episodes exactly because it strikes so hard. Well, the whole show does, actually - it makes you uneasy, but in a very thought-provoking way.

Utena the child dies. Utena the woman lives. You can't say that isn't "real." You can't say it isn't a sacrifice. It's huge, and it's painful, but it isn't the end. And that makes it so beautiful and joyous.

All these Utena secrets posted in the past few days and the resulting discussions really makes me want to rewatch the series.

I know, right? I have rewatched it recently after a long time (what, six years or so) and I'm still hooked.

I loved her pointless blabber, too. It added a lot to the already incredible atmosphere. It's truthfully one of the best episodes in the show.

Yeah, I was spoiled for her getting it on with Akio at a certain point, yet the shock factor still manages to be intact IMO. She keeps talking on the pillow, and you assume it's a post coital thing or something, and then she twitches and moans a little, and you're like "oh crap". I actually had to watch it twice to notice that most of the episode is from Akio's POV - one's got to love the direction in this show, really.
