Yes, it is nice to see a woman in the news who is not only intelligent but a minority. I suppose I'm more sympathetic to your viewpoint than others here have been because I myself am bisexual (or more accurately, attracted to personality) and seeing another minority that is just as discriminated against as me doing SO WELL is amazing for me.

They don't mean to cause harm, but it does bother me that other people in the community see a male and female who are friendly and have chemistry and automatically want them to be having sex. It's a default mentality "THEY'RE THE OPPOSITE GENDER AND ARE FRIENDS, THEY MUST BE HAVING SEX."

Well, that default "they are opposite genders, they must be fucking" is pretty textbook heterosexist. Which is why the defensiveness is making me shake my head.

I know no one means to cause harm, it's just a little frustrating to finally see a successful lesbian, and then to have the people in my happy funtiems place harsh my squee by making her not a lesbian anymore.

:/ I suppose you're right, but they all seem aware of her sexuality and have no problem with it...I can't believe that they would really believe or Rachel to be "just a girl who finally found the right guy." And I don't think that their fics have any effect on or reinforce that stereotype.

And yeah, I know what you mean. I tend to ignore the straight!Rachel fics like the plague. Still, I can't bring myself to demonize those who do ship her with a guy.

In fandom, at least in my experience (I have no idea who these guys are) it's more a case of

"THEY ARE FUCKING!"

They don't have to interact, they don't have to be the same species, they don't have to have chemisrty, they don't have to be the opposite sex, they don't have to be the same sex etc. etc. People ship anything and everything, as long as they think it's hot/cracky/hot/good dynamic/hot/they like the characters (people in this case, I think (eww RPF ;))/did I mention hot?

There is little psychology involved beyong those points.

As I said I understand the OP, and know why he/she would feel the way they feel, but I disagree with the OP.

And it's mostly because of this, but other's tried to explain that to the OP earlier so I didn't want to get into it. (I GET WHY YOU'RE GROSSED OUT BY RPF. XD. TO EACH THEIR OWN, RIGHT?)
