I can list the animes I like on my hands: 1)Grave of the Fireflies 2)Tonari no Totoro 3)Spirited Away 4)Porco Rosso 5)Akira 6)Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust 6)Shoujo Cosette (but only the bits with the Friends of the ABCs) 8) Hoshi no Koe 9)Blood: the Last Vampire... and that's that. I've tried others, but I truly don't think they're worth more than anything else that really bad. I understand I'm elitist, but there are fewer animes that have subjects I enjoy. Where is the truly moving idealism of Dead Poets Society, the truly amazing cinematographie of The Constant Gardener, the acting and costumes of Gangs of New York, the charisma and heartbreak of La Revolution Francaise, the 1934 version of Les Miserables or the more recent Milk, or the eeriness of Silence of the Lambs or Das Experiment? Where? If you can make a suggestion for me that has any of these, other than the anime I've already said I like, please do tell me!

Not OP, but I suggest Monster, Kaiba, Mushishi, Haibane Renmei, Gankutsuou, Cowboy Bebop, and Victorian Romance Emma. :)

Oh, and Whisper of the Heart and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time are two other great anime movies. You might like anything by Satoshi Kon too. *will shut up now*

Oh... I forgot about Cowboy Bebop on that list: one of my favorites - both the movie and the show, actually, because what they lose in acting and effects they make up for by having cool, fleshed-out characters, a plot and really sweet music integration: someone put talent into making that and it shows.
I didn't know Victorian Romance Emma was an anime: thought it was only manga, have read one of two of them, they were so-so, namely I can watch many a movie with superb acting and incredibly how-did-they-do-that special effects to get almost identical plots.
I don't know about Gankutsuou: it caused me a headache when I tried to watch it. Also, there's just something off about the way it's drawn.
Whisper of the Heart is nice, but not particularly memorable. I wouldn't want to own it, but I might rent it in a movie marathon.

Haven't heard of the others... Basically, the question I ask about animes are: What are they about? How good is the animation? How are the characters and their arcs? Do they have too many plot holes to make them watchable? Does the music make sense within them? Are the effects that are used used in a believable way or do they add to the movie in a way that's not hokey? Basically, this amounts to: did someone, or enough people, put talent into a movie for it to be appreciatedly noticeable?

Fair enough for those three. XD Though I personally prefer the Emma anime to the manga (at least for the first season) because of all the research put into it to make the period setting come to life in animation.

Anyway, I'll go into a little more detail on some of the anime I mentioned and recommend some others. Hopefully I can answer some of your questions in regards to them, though I'll try to be brief. Mainly I agree with the OP in that anime comes in many genres, art styles, and target audiences, so that nearly anyone should be able to find at least one that they like if they bother to look. Some of them I truly consider works of art. Though unfortunately, some of them aren't legally available in English either.

Monster (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ph8rdUo0B2M) is a 75-episode psychological suspense thriller. It's the sort of series you'd probably see on HBO if it were live action. It starts out deceptively simple, but it unwinds into a mystery that takes the main character across Europe, meeting many people on the way and learning their stories. The themes deal with evil and morality and the plot is complex. Honestly, you could just check out the manga for this too, since the anime adapted it very faithfully. I love the anime version for its atmosphere, but the manga would be easier to get into.

Kaiba (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW_ueoa-1hg) is, as explained here (http://guriguriblog.wordpress.com/2009/01/03/kaiba/), a "warm cyberpunk." The soundtrack is amazing and totally fits the tone of melancholy beauty. The animation direction is pretty incredible too, and while the art style looks very childish, it's very much an adult fairytale. I found it unsettling, surreal, incredibly sad, and heartwarming. Basically, when the main character spends about half of the show in other peoples' bodies, you know its got to be something bizarre and special.

Mushishi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiRBReqm0Mw) is a personal favorite of mine. It has no ongoing plot; its a series of episodic stories centering around creatures called Mushi and a man who is an expert on them going to fix peoples' problems. But the art is just beautiful. It's like watching watercolor paintings. The stories themselves are fascinating in their own right; they're like old Japanese folktales and show a great appreciation for nature. Each episode also has a musical theme of its own. It's a good anime to watch when you want to relax.

Haibane Renmei (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFRN8Q4IYhg&feature=related) is another surreal anime, with more of a spiritual and slice-of-life touch. It was a little slow for my tastes, and it doesn't answer all the questions that it brings up, but many people have said it struck an emotional chord for them, and it's clearly a pet project.

Others that came to mind:
Dennou Coil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecrDFu-bzt8) Really captures the innocence of childhood and deals with the effects of technology on childrens' lives. Very smooth animation, great use of effects. Cute and heartwarming, but also ventures into dark territory.

Baccano! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUL-Koia0wo&feature=related) I wouldn't call this artistic, but it's a lot of fun. It uses a Pulp Fiction-esque method of telling its story; in the beginning you have no idea what's going on, but by the end everything makes sense and its a thrill putting all the pieces together.

Mononoke (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubjixDnrzIo) Kinda similar to Mushishi, except there's a greater focus on horror, with its stories told in arcs like a whodunnit mystery. Also, it has a very unique art style and direction.

Out of these, Mushishi, Haibane Renmei, and Baccano! are available on DVD in the US, but the rest can be easily found fansubbed on the internet. (While Mononoke is an interesting case in that its first arc is told in another series that actually did come out on DVD.)

Grave of the Fireflies D: That makes me bawl.

I second the rec for Mushishi, I haven't seen the anime but I love the manga. I've only heard great things about the anime, and even a few saying they think it's better than the manga, because it is faithful to it, but also has extra atmosphere provided by the colour, movement, sound effects and sound track.

I didn't think much of Emma, either. It was a bit blah for me.

I really want to see The Girl Who lept Through Time, I've seen some really good reviews for it.

This may seem like a strange rec. I'm not sure if you are familiar with Rurouni Kenshin? I'm not a big fan of the anime, but I like the manga. However, the anime had a four episode OVA series that dealt with Kenshin's past. It's tone and animation are of a very different caliber to the main series. It's a dark and tragic tale, and it's made me cry every time I've watched it. I still prefer the manga for that bit of Kenshin's story, due to a few subtle (but I think important) changes they made, but I love the OVA's as well. You should be able to watch it without following the whole anime or manga. I also love the soundtrack. It's one of only a few sound tracks that have no lyrics that I listen to outside of the anime/film itself.

I wholeheartedly second Haibane Renmei and Mushishi. I'd second Gankutsuou, too, since it's one of my favorites, but I totally understand the OH GOD MY EYES objection--one of my buddies got violently motionsick trying to watch it.
