Yeah I'm quite happy to be a lurker in my fandoms, I write my fic, post it, and then wander off without getting involved in any stupid in-fighting. I never had the patience for that when I was younger, never mind as an adult, I'm not 15 anymore and I'm sure as hell not going to act like it.

I'm the same - I think for me it's because when I was a young teen I was in very few fandoms so I shipped characters, and now I'm older I've read/watched/played, joined and left many, many fandoms so I ship the character dynamics instead.

I will ship the best friends, and the archenemies, and the fucked-up villains pairing, and the team mom&dad, and the needy one with the huggy one, and the parasite and the host, plus others, and there will be overlap. That's fine with me - I don't get stuck with two fics per fandom to read because I tripped and fell into rarepair hell :)

Fiction exists to explore different situations and experiences. Sometimes experiencing pain and misery through people who don’t exist and therefore cannot be actually hurt is what we need. There's really nothing to feel bad about.

I read fics about characters going through awful things all the time. It is partially because I find the characterization interesting and I like the exploration of what it does to a character and then how they do or don't recover (if they live), but mostly it is because it is cathartic. It is nothing to be ashamed of. I used to feel weird about it, but I've realized that lots of people have the same desire for cathartic fic, whatever it is that specifically provides that relief for them.

Catharsis, nonnie! You're not hurting anyone, the characters are fine afterwards, and you get to let those feelings flow.

There are a lot of ways of responding to stress. Watching Hamlet or taking in some other story about fictional characters suffering is one of the time-honored sensible ways that doesn't harm anyone.

My daughter was hooked by Dynamite and then she started liking the other songs and now she LOVES butter and I just...found a friend who is super into it and let them be my fandom guide. That way I know what is going on, but I don't have to deal with any of the super Army wackiness

I feel the same way about seals. Animals being somehow purer than humans are a myth. It seems like the more intelligent animals have the same propensity to be assholes as any human.
