I've rewatched this recently and still love it. I think it has some of the best sound of the Bronze age of Disney animation.

I'm not really sure why you feel this way, to be honest. I rewatched this last year and I didn't notice any of that stuff. *shrug*

It’s not too bad from what I remember. I’ve not watched it in about ten years but half the fun for me anyway was always Vincent Price being...well, Vincent Price.

Ratigan is pretty much my favorite thing about this movie :'D

Oh yeah. Plus the film gave me the opportunity to MEET Mr. Price, a memory I treasure.

ooooh, I want to hear this story! I love Vincent Price!

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art held a seminar on the film because of its at-the-time breakthrough use of CGI with drawn animation (this was 1986). Mr. Price was a guest speaker and frankly I think most of the people who showed up came to see him, as animation was not yet cool for adults yet (though I'm sure there were animation people or would-be animators there too). I got his autograph, a picture taken with him... and a kiss, which made 15-year-old me totally squee (if that term was around back then).

I also have the autographs of some of the animators, including future Disney big name Glen Keane, but I've misplaced them in the family house somewhere.

He’s a bit cartoonish but... you know...

I never had any opinion on this movie as a Sherlock Holmes adaptation, myself-I knew it was inspired by that, of course, but I've not seen any other Sherlock adaptations or read the books, so that was the extent of my knowledge on that level. I just enjoyed the movie as a kid simply 'cause it was fun in and of itself and I liked Disney movies in general :D.

It's been some time since I've seen it, but I seem to recall it still holding up for me when I last saw it. But I can see where it might not hold up as well for you, yeah-I do seem to remember Basil being a little on the rude side at times. Though I think he does soften up a little towards the end, too.

Basically, all this talk makes me want to go watch the movie again now :p.

That Big Ben sequence tho

(Anonymous) 2021-06-02 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Just brilliant. That should be filmed for real - perhaps in a watered-down version - in the actual clock room. It would do very well in Ritchie-verse.
