...I agree and I find it so amusing that you pointedly credited the artist here. :D Nicely done, OP. (And the art is cute!)

Right? If you can't tag them, list their name, find a SM handle.

What if, in a movie's credits, they just said "Credit to the thousands of people who made this film :)"

It makes me mad when I find my stuff 'credited' that way. And if you ask for proper credit, they refuse or are jerky about it 97% of the time...at the least.

One time someone even tried to tell me that it belonged to their friend because it was their friend who originally showed it to them.

ARGH.

(Hot button topic, sorry, sorry)

YES, if you're not naming the artist, you're not really giving credit.

Even better if those fuckers actually take the time and effort to edit out any watermarks or signatures.

I also found my own art (that I posted on instagram myself) reposted TO instagram by some dumb roleplaying account for the ship and it had more likes than my own which hurts especially because it's a rarepair that doesn't get a huge amount of notes anyway.

omg I got the same shit as well. Someone uploaded a silly doodle of mine to open a RP and added "credits to the artist", when my sign is right there!

Same thing happened to one of my friends, but the person who reposted her art and didn’t credit her told her she should be flattered because the thief’s account had more followers, so really it was just good “exposure” for her art . . . except the thief still refused to tag her or mention her username. People are so damn shitty.

...Fun fact, I made the bunny mood themes that are now on DW about 20 years ago, originally for LJ. When I was doing that, I made a couple extra bunny animations for my own personal use, and only used them on my own journal (custom mood theme, LJ never implemented new site mood themes in the day).

So one day a few years later, someone notifies me they found ALL the gifs, uncredited, on a personal site as "free gifs!" Including the secret ones that only I used and were not included in the mood theme zip. Someone didn't just take the gifs that I had made available for public use, but scraped the directory they were in. -_- Contacted the site owner and they were like "oohhhhhhh we didn't know!" ...Right. You had to go looking for a couple of those gifs. If you did that, you had to know who made them. Sigh.

Wow. Yeeeeesh.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-02 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for making my comment into a secret, secret maker! I love the picture you chose and the fact that you credited the artist. :)

It's like trying to pay for your groceries by shouting "Money to the store!" as you walk past the checkout lines.

This really made me laugh

YUP.
I've gone so far as to google image search a picture to try and track down the artist.

I fully admit to posting fanart when I couldn't find it anywhere on tumblr after a thorough search. I am aware many people consider that bad to do. I do it anyway. But if I can't figure out who the artist is, credit them, and link to them, I don't post the fanart, period. Unfortunately, it has meant that I can't post a solid 75% of the best fanart for my OTP, because I have spent a literal hour trying to track down links for a single piece, several times now, and all I ever get is a thousand different saves of the art that are unaccredited and lead to nowhere. :/

I think it's okay if you've looked hard and you say where you originally got the art from and that you'd love to know who made it. I did this once for an older fandom that I'd joined late, and someone who had been in the fandom back in the day came along and knew whose art it was and linked me to more!

(Anonymous) 2021-06-03 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you need to post it, though?
You probably didn't find it on tumblr cause it came from Pixiv or another site people regularly take art from without asking the artist.

I hate that! If someone arts good I want to look at more of their stuff.

Typing "Credit to the artist!" is like briefly turning on the water at the sink instead of washing your hands. Somehow it's worse than doing nothing.

Or worse: "Source: twitter.com". Yess... very helpful, thank you.
