I feel you.

But as someone that is definitely guilty of this - I don't know another way to find good fic. I can google [fandom] fic recs, but that's not a great method either :(

It's not that having high kudos is a guarantee of quality. It's that the set of fics that are in the top 10%, 15%, 20% most kudos have a much higher proportion of quality fics than fics as a whole do. And even when a highly-kudos'd fic is tropey and OOC, it's still likely to be better written compared to all of the tropey, OOC fics that don't have many kudos.

The majority of fic is OOC, id-fic. At least I will be reading the good shit if I sort by most kudos.

...I largely agree with these comments but in my own past experience it seems that sorting by kudos also tends to turn up fic with two certain other qualities:

1: sex scene
2: nicely written but generally vanilla

Cause fandom wants the porn, and they want it relatable as opposed to anything with weird kinks that might make it interesting for people who are not interested in porn. Or maybe that's just my few fandoms, I dunno.

Kudos are great for finding guilty pleasures type of fic, or older fic. I tend to use word count and bookmarks from authors I like to find stories.

I just find the whole "sorting by kudos" thing odd because I hear so many writers dismiss kudos as "Well, yeah, they're okay, but comments are much better" or "Anyone can click a kudos button, it doesn't mean anything" and things of that sort...

..and yet, when it comes to deciding what to read, sorting by kudos is common. So which is it, are kudos a good indicator of people liking the fic or aren't they?

To each their own, of course, but speaking for myself, I never go by numbers when looking for stuff to read. I just go to the start of the page and work my way down/through the pages and go from there, or by the tags if there's a specific type of fic I'm in the mood to read. It's worked fine for me thus far. *Shrugs*

Agreed. That and all the best written fics I've read, especially the kinky ones, netted only a handful of kudos so I ignore the feature altogether when hunting for new stuff to read in my fandoms.

100% agreed.

Sorting by kudos has either gotten me garbage OOC, poorly written smut that hits the fandoms kinks so it's rated high, or fic so unbearably pretentious I can feel the smugness of the writer emanating off the screen(and these fics aren't good imo either).

I just click on the tag I'm after and then go through the pages and click on the fics that appeal. It takes longer but tbh I don't consider it a waste of my time. I also do the looking at a writers other works, and looking through their bookmarks if I like the fic, that works far better for me.

Why is that so boggling?

People often use popularity of a thing as a measure. Star ratings for online shopping. Rotten Tomatoes or IMDb ratings or box-office for movies. Best-selling for, well, anything. It's just a way to start looking, really, for fic, especially if there are hundreds of thousands of stories.

It's the exact same way I look for a product to buy on Amazon to a point - narrow it by some criteria (ship or character, date range, etc. for fic; price range, color, etc. for products), sort (by kudos for fic, by rating for products), then start looking through the page (check summaries and tags for fic, check product description and image for products), click on something that looks promising, read further to see if I like it.

If a lot of people like a thing, it's for a reason. It doesn't mean that I'll like everything that a lot of other people like. I do think that I am more likely to find more fics that I consider good in the top half of the fics with the most kudos than the bottom half, excepting new fic, which I go through separately. And yes, sometimes, the reason is because it's id-fic.

I'm with you, OP.
A high kudos count may indicate a good fic, or it could be a fic that's terribly written but just hits all the tropes people love.
Popularity does not equal good.
