I feel you.

But as someone that is definitely guilty of this - I don't know another way to find good fic. I can google [fandom] fic recs, but that's not a great method either :(

I usually find a fic I enjoy, then start going through the author's bookmarks. It's not infallible, but someone who writes fic I like generally has similar tastes.

People who know how to write, know how to tell whether another story is well written, and they know how to find other people who know how to write. And yeah, someone who writes what you like probably reads what you like, too.

+1

This has been my latest "rec list".

I also check out some of the users who liked/kudo'd the fic -- they sometimes have similar tastes to mine.

My usual way of sorting through fics (kinda time consuming but hey, we're reading fic, so...)
Steps:
1. Filter by fandom and pairing
2. Scroll through first few pages (most recently updated -- or add to your filters complete or incomplete)
3. Depending on the length I want (one shot, 17/?, 56/63 chapters etc.), Click on any that have interesting summaries/premise. So that means a few tabs. Either "save for later" or bookmark for yourself. If the writing is good/holds your attention)the story works for you, save that one and move onto the next, eliminating anything that displeases you (I can usually tell in the first few paragraphs if I'm going to enjoy the writing or not). Once everything is saved, i check the authors to see if they have anything else written or some relevant bookmarks. I then bookmark the author so I don't forget them.

And that's how I sort through fics. I don't even look at reviews or kudos. The only number I pay attention to is story length, as i tend to like longer and more involved tales (and everybody LOVES to write [usually smutty] one shots. Which often are great, but what a TEASE when the writing is good and they wrote nothing else for the pairing!). Sometimes I start from the last page and work my way forward.

You might not go about it this way, but here's an option! I honestly never thought to sort it by kudos lol. Only ever by latest update/complete.

I'm also on board with checking out the bookmarks of authors you enjoy as a sort of "curated rec list". Some you may not like, but then you get make your own list and have some quality stuff!

I filter by bookmark. It's one thing to read a fic and leave kudos, but another to bookmark it for reccing or rereading. There's still some overlap, but overall the results tend to be much better for me.
