Writing OOC completely defeats the point of fanfic. No fic is well written if it's OOC.

It could be OOC for one character but IC for other characters, it could be OOC but still accurately represent the aesthetic and themes of the source material

Or it could be totally OOC but still a good story, in which case, it might be a bad fanfic but I may still enjoy reading it

I mean fics where the author clearly isn't even trying. Trying and not quite getting it is one thing. Not had about the characters but writing the same OOC shit (usually AU) is bad writing in a fanfic context. End of.

If it's an AU and it's OOC but the writer is able...the story is engaging and well-formed and the dialogue is good and there are no SPAG errors, I see it as a good story about the hot actors.

I'm usually in a fandom for the character dynamics of a given ship, but also because the actors are hot, so I don't mind this.

I mean even stipulating that OOC fic is bad, it still doesn't mean that all OOC fic is equally bad. There's better and worse writing quality even in OOC fic.
