ime, the smaller the fandom, the more useful it is to sort by kudos. (Until you get to the really tiny fandoms, at which point you should probably just check out every posted fic.) With averagely large fandoms, I find sorting by bookmarks works better. And with massive fandoms, the best system is usually to find at least a few authors you enjoy and rec-hop using their bookmarks, and their bookmarked authors' bookmarks, and etc.
