...I largely agree with these comments but in my own past experience it seems that sorting by kudos also tends to turn up fic with two certain other qualities:

1: sex scene
2: nicely written but generally vanilla

Cause fandom wants the porn, and they want it relatable as opposed to anything with weird kinks that might make it interesting for people who are not interested in porn. Or maybe that's just my few fandoms, I dunno.

TBH I feel like well written + weird kinks is such a rare combo you're going to have a hard time finding it no matter what you do to search

Indeed, only time I see it is by stumbling across it, or it's by someone I know and thus saw it on their account.

These days I don't really search for fic much anymore... if it comes to me it comes to me. =)

Oh, this. I hadn't thought about it before but the top kudos fics are almost always very vanilla - more often then not, fluffy too.

Yeah, and I don't mean to imply there's anything wrong with that. Fluff is fine, vanilla is fine. It's pretty logical that the things with the most expressions of "I like this!" are the things that are relatable to the largest amount of people.

Just noting that probably searching by kudos will in addition to the other qualities people have mentioned, likely turn up something pretty unthreatening and not too risky in content, but also probably the unthreatening non-risky stuff will involve a sex scene or two (or more). :D

I came here to actually say that I'd sort by kudos if I want to find the shippiest of shippy fics that might have some good porn at some point (if I'm in that sort of mood) but I know it'll be fairly straight forward, more than likely with a romantic angle than just horniness.

Obviously there's still OOC crap even using this method. But for reasons you've pointed out, you're probably going to find something good quite easily if 1. shippy/fluffy and 2. decently written (but not too "out there") sex scenes are your requirements.

Indeed, and sometimes that's okay...? Because I know there were a couple fics I've read where the plot and lead-up was rather poorly written but then the author seemed to hit their stride with the sex scene. Possibly it was just all an excuse to write a hot sex scene. So, you know, it's all good, even if it's not really my scene.
