One word: sporkings.

As mean-spirited and cringey as sporkings were, they're actually a great example of how much more mature fandom used to be. Because it was a nearly universal rule that if you participated in a sporking, you were absolutely not to directly contact the writer of the sporked fic and harass them. And almost everyone actually obeyed the rule. Occasionally a spork-ee would find out about their fic being sporked and get upset, but it was usually dealt with in a much more civil manner than it would be today.

Also, sporkings still exist. They're just rebranded as "cringe compilations" and regularly cause cyberbullying and doxxing.

That was the rule but people absolutely did contact and harass the authors, just like the rule on fandom_wank was never to take wank back to the source but it constantly happened. I got my first fandom death threat way back in 1996!

I think the problem is much more that every fandom space is all over every other fandom space (thanks Tumblr and Twitter) and you can't make community norms happen like you could on LJ or DW. Though I'm also old enough to remember usenet and mailing lists, and boy howdy was there a lot of bullying and exclusion happening on mailing lists.

LMAO sporkings were not fucking mature at all. They were essentially, "Let's talk shit about how awful this person is behind their back." The only difference is people are more open with how cruel they are about others.
