It was marketed terribly. I'm saying this as someone who did love it because it was the love-letter to Gothic Romance/Horror that I was expecting from the stuff I'd read about it beforehand. But a lot of the ads that your average non-cinephile non-book lover were encountering made it look like it'd be a lot more action-packed with the ghosts taking on a much larger role. In the UK it was released near Halloween as well, which I don't think helped the perception.

I don't think it deserves the slating it got because for me, it did what it said on the tin but maybe not the same tin some other people were expecting. I'm glad there's more people out there who enjoyed it though and indeed found it scary if that's your thing!

I feel like The Haunting of Bly Manor suffered similarly- people thought it was going to be much more Horror focused than it was. But it was a good ... more of a gothic romance.

This is actually making me want to check out Crimson Peak now.

Definitely a similar thing! I didn’t think Bly was as good as Hill House but it was more or less what I expected a thing based on Turn of the Screw with a modern twist to be like.

Ngl Crimson Peak isn’t exactly amazing in terms of the genre and it’s corny/a well-worn path (as you’d probably expect) but it hits the right buttons imo.
