I don't think they're scary, but I do think they're spooky, and sexy, and interestingly metaphorical, and that matters a lot more to me than scary. And I find the ability to pick and choose the mythology interesting.

then, monster preferences come down to what one wants out of the monster, no? whether you want it scary, intimidating, and idk other things, vs sexy and weird? I can get with that. we can definitely agree to disagree on vampires since we clearly want different things from our monsters.

As someone who loves vampires in fiction, ITA with all of this.

The build-your-own aspect of vampires is honestly what makes them so great, IMO. They work however you want them to, and it's all fine. I love that.
