I don't feel sorry for him, but I appreciate the show was nuanced enough to understand why he behaved and acted the way he did. His life sucked and was based on a lie, and that's sympathetic, but in the end, he just could not get over his own insecurities and the dogma he and Grace built, and died a pretty awful death for it. And damn, I think that's good storytelling.

I'm still kind of stunned how brutal his death was just because - streaming service or not - you still don't see an onscreen death like his on an all age show.

Book 3 rocked and I'm sad we'll never see its continuation. Book 5 would have had Amelia in the lead? Holy shit, I want this so bad! Maybe comic book adapation? IDW? Dark Horse? Wanna get in on this? I need more.
