I watched this and read the TVtropes page and...this series is like DBZ; Every time I turn around, someone has a new title and is a reincarnated warrior princess of a planet and also a guardian of something or other. I don't begrudge anyone their fantasy, but wow am I confused at the story.

The costumes and transformations are always beautiful though.

I never thought too hard about the whys when I watched Sailor Moon as a kid, but I rewatched the whole thing as an adult and all of Crystal as well and the series can get pretty damn confusing. I still love it thought, even with all its flaws (except Chibiusa's creepy obsession with her future dad and Usagi's equally creepy jealousy of her future daughter).

There is a lot of great stuff about the Sailor Moon as a whole that really influenced girls like me back in the days, but in terms of narrative - especially the manga and its Crystal adaptation, ya kinda just...have to go with it. The plot is largely style over substance, so there's a lot of moments in manga/Crystal where you just kinda sit down and go full Krusty the Clown ("What the hell was that?!")

I'm also partially biased because even though it's not perfect, I like the 90s anime more since it's much more coherent (though there are many things the manga/Crystal does better than the 90s anime, of course.)

I prefer the '90s anime too. I liked seeing a lot of the villains get redeemed, which didn't really happen in the manga.

Same. Since I was a kid during the 90s airing, a lot of the villains redeeming was Brand New Storytelling territory for me. Imagine like seven-year-old me realizing that Good Guys and Bad Guys are not as binary as I thought. And there were some damn good villain redemption in that show.

Nephrite's death still hits me like a brick.

I will go to my death a Nephrite/Naru stan. I watched the 90s anime before ever getting around to the manga, so I was so upset that not only was that not a thing, but that there was the whole Shitennou/Senshi thing too. Doubly upsetting because my full-on OTP has always been Makoto/Ami! ;_;

DA I did not like the Shitennou/Senshi thing at all, but I really hated that Crystal tried to make it a thing and didn't do a damn thing with it. Just, "Oh, here's my lover from the past---Oh wait, he just blew up. I'm gonna cry now". Like, why?

Nephrite's death still makes me cry whenever I rewatch it (and I'm still a bit surprised Dic left it in), but it was the Amazon Trio that really hurt me. Something about them realizing they don't have dream mirrors, then dying while restoring Usagi's dream mirror, and finally getting sorta revived and realizing they do have dream mirrors made me cry the ugliest happy tears when I was a kid.

Not just sorta, the implications are that they're being put in the reincarnation cycle when Pegasus/Helios is free.

Yeah, I wasn't lucky enough to see a lot of it as a kid. Just enough to know that Venus was my favorite. I didn't even know there were Outer Senshi until about 10 years later. One of these days I'll try the 90's version.
