Yeah, tropes like that have turned me away from a lot of shoujo media in general. But it has made me appreciate the ones that don't fall onto these kinds of tropes.

On the other hand, I have a friend who enjoys this kind of stuff (weak girl protected by burly man) who says she enjoys them as fantasy rather than something she wants for herself. So yeah, YMMV. I'm slowly learning to enjoy them as well as a sorta fantasy as well and not take them seriously.
