105. With (1), I think it's heavily implied in canon. The Knight's old sword is called "The Lohengrin Sword", and when you consider that there's an Opera by Wagner about a "swan knight" named Lohengrin...it's a pretty obvious reference, and it makes sense that it was his name.
That said, no, it's not canon, but it's far more canon than any other name you could possibly give him, so it makes sense.

On (2), I doubt that the actual book had a lot of detail on character backgrounds (and I think I've even said as much in my own fanfiction), but I think the actual characters/people in the story had more detail to them than the story did, because of the nature of Drosselmeyer's powers. It really seems like the characters that Drosselmeyer creates become *real people*, regardless of how flat he writes them. Real people have complex emotions and backgrounds, so I think they'd just spring up because of being made "real". That's just my interpritation, however.

I agree on (3). Tutu/Lohengrin doesn't make much sense to me. Tutu is explicately said to have been a footnote character that was in love with the Prince. The Knight doesn't seem to have really had any dealings with her--they're both focused on the Prince. I actually think it makes more sense for them to have fought over how to best protect Siegfried, if anything. And Tutu and Lohengrin (or whoever) are NOT the same people as Ahiru and Fakir, and I dislike it when they're written as being exactly the same--just comparing Tutu to Ahiru in the series shows there's differences.

...Sorry, I like thinking about this stuff and fanon. You're totally entitled to your own opinion on things and you have logical reasons for thinking the way you do, I just disagree on some of the points.

107. Yay for the BBC Miniseries!

126.I hope you'll be able to, since he's a famous person I'm 99% sure you never met in real life, and it's easier to have a deeper relationship with people when you actually talk to them and get to know more than their public personas.

153. I actually liked the movie, yeah. The books were better, but the movie had some HILARIOUS parts. (Plus, didn't the author work on the original script? So it wasn't like a stranger was trying to make something that seemed like what he would do.)

156. ...Ignorant anime fan is ignorant--is that the Warhammer-based fanfic I keep hearing about?? XD

161. I mostly agree. The real world is important, too, but the sense of community and truly intelligent, nice fans you meet at cons are so...refreshing. Particularly compared to the internet. Con still have some creepy fans, though, but even most of them seem to be genuinely TRYING to be nice...just a little social disfunctional.

Sorry for being completely out of the loop, but what fandom is that? I'm intrigued by all I'm hearing about the secret, but I have no idea what it is. :x

Just jumping in 'cause I saw this unanswered and happen to be passing by - the fandom is an anime called Princess Tutu.

Thank you. :)

No need to apologize! It's a bit obscure. It's an anime called "Princess Tutu"--which, er, is a lot better than the cutesy name makes it sound.

Re: 105

[identity profile] mahkia.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard the name before, actually, but never looked into what it was because....um....the name makes it sound ridiculous. XD I'm not normally that shallow, so now that I've seen more about it, I may very well pursue. :3 Thanks for replying.

I knoooow, I did the same thing. Particularly since the character designs are very...wide-eyed and goofy. But yes, it's surprisingly well put together once the series hits episode 6 or so and the real meat of the plot begins. I hope you have a chance to look into it, it's a great series and I'm totally fangirly about it. ^^

And that's enough blabbermouthing from me. XD You're welcome!

105 OP is just catching up to f!s, sorry

(Anonymous) 2009-02-10 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
First, IIRC, the Sword of Lonhengrin was never actually said to have belonged to the Knight from the story. That's another one of those fanon things that people seem to forget is fanon. Second, does the Sword of Omens belong to a guy named Omens? Does Zantetsuken belong to a guy named Zantetsu? Did Excalibur belong to Mr. Arthur P. Excalibur, Esquire, or Anduril belong to Mr. Andy Ril?

Sorry to get flippant. It's not like I'm saying "There's no way the Knight's name could be Lonhengrin" or "Nobody should use that name in their fics". It just bugs me how it seems like everybody now just uses that name as if everybody should know and accept that it refers to the Knight from the story, rather than the sword. There might be a character named "Lonhengrin" in your fic or rp, but there's no character named "Lonhengrin" in Princess Tutu.

NP, i know how it is

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2009-02-10 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but there's a difference between those swords and the Lohengrin sword. We don't know of any people named Excalibur or Omens or whoever in those stories. However, we do know that Mytho's true name is Siegfried--both a reference to Swan Lake, and a reference to the character from Wagner's Ring Cycle (Siegfried's death march from the opera is used as one of Mytho's themes in the show)...and Lohengrin is a character from another one of Wagner's operas. The reference fits well within the world of the show. Excalibur is an object in Arthurian legend, but Lohengrin is actually a person.

As for everyone using it, that's really the nature of fanon, and something that happens in all fandoms. Nobody's forcing you to use the name in your own fic if you don't want to, it's just an easy way to identify him and give him a name. I mean, when it comes right down to it, Evil!Mytho isn't a name, either, but it's easier to say than "Mytho in the second season when he's tainted by Raven's blood and wears a black ballet costume." And the Knight could just be called...the Knight, but then you could confuse him with the Ghost Knight from episode 18, or Fakir himself.

Re: NP, i know how it is

(Anonymous) 2009-02-10 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a reference to a real mythological knight, yes, but that still does not indicate that the Sword of Lohengrin ever belonged to the Knight from "Prinz und Rabe", nor that that Knight was named Lohengrin. "Mytho" is a name, "Evil" is a descriptive. The actual characters in the anime never referred to the Knight as anything but "the Knight" and it didn't seem to confuse viewers. A lot of fairy tale characters, protagonists or otherwise, don't actually have proper names.

IT JUST IRRITATES ME IS ALL. DAMMIT, WHY CAN'T PEOPLE JUST DO EVERYTHING MY WAY?!

Re: NP, i know how it is

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2009-02-10 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, that's slightly incorrect. I'm pretty sure that when Fakir is asking for it from Charon, he says "You promised you'd let me have it--The Knight's sword. The Lohengrin Sword." Now, this is me saying this from memory, and I'm slightly more familiar with the dub (I'm hearing Chris Patton's voice saying this, I know that for sure), and I'm at college so I can't currently check my DVDs, so I can't promise this is 100% accurate--but if the quote is close to what I'm remembering, Fakir is saying the Lohengrin Sword is The Knight's sword. The two are definitely connected...as long as my memory isn't failing me and "the knight's sword" isn't exclusive to the dub. (Which is generally very close to the official subs, buuuut every now and then something's "off".)

I IDENTIFY WITH PEOPLE NOT DOING THINGS MY WAY, HOWEVER. So I'm not...like...saying you're a horrible fan or anything. XD;;; I have my own hang-ups about things, like...people using Ahiru instead of Duck. (LOL, yes, I know. It actually only bothers me in fanfiction set in canon, too. Long story that.)

Re: NP, i know how it is

(Anonymous) 2009-02-11 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well now that I don't recall. I have the DVDs but have only watched bits and pieces of the dub, so I was going off my memories of the fansubs.

I like it when people use Duck, but I still mostly call her Ahiru because I got used to it. :P
