There is also something to be said for series that had a planned run and stuck to the plan. These generally have more potential to have a better constructed overall plot structure and resolution…

Also, knowing going in to a series that it wandered around for several seasons past its prime could certainly be considered a turnoff when deciding whether or not to start watching.
