Very true. And the secret image is a prime example. SPN would have been so much better if it had stuck to the original 5 season plan.

I'll be the person who says, I only dislike it if it actually ruins the characters....and I don't think SPN did. I actually really like some of the plots and what they said about repeated trauma or normalization and extremely toxic family dynamics that people don't want to leave. There were a lot of stuff that spoke to exhaustion of imagination, namely repeating a lot of Sam's existential conflicts with other characters but with no depth, lmao, but I actually find the characters remarkably consistent.

Grey's Anatomy on the other hand has made some decisions.

I feel this way about The Simpsons, but oddly enough, not Supernatural. I actually like some of the storylines that they came up with after the planned five season arc ended, particularly where Cas is concerned, but the actual ending did sour the whole show for me (I'm working on pretending none of it happened).

Personally, my approach to this problem is to start off by taking the fandom's temperature on how the quality of the show fluctuates over the course of its run. I find it much easier to deal with the story disappointing me if I've known what to expect on that front pretty much from the start. Knowing what to expect helps me have equanimity about it, I think, so that it doesn't poison the entire show for me. And when I do it that way, I can also choose to simply stop watching at a certain point if I really want to.

There is also something to be said for series that had a planned run and stuck to the plan. These generally have more potential to have a better constructed overall plot structure and resolution…

Also, knowing going in to a series that it wandered around for several seasons past its prime could certainly be considered a turnoff when deciding whether or not to start watching.

And then there are shows like Pose that only get a season or two before they're canceled. (Pose got 3 seasons and season 3 was literally 6 episodes, with episode 1 and episode 6 being 2 hours each.)

It sucks.

Edit to add- I stay out of fandom, so no worries about getting any flack for walking away from a show. I've walked away from Criminal Minds after Shermar Moore left. Walked away from The Walking Dead about season 8, I think - I got bored. Walked away from all the CW superhero shows after various seasons- because I, again, got bored.

NCIS is heading that way and they're in season what now? So disappointed that NCIS New Orleans was canceled- we like it better that NCIS LA and original NICIS anymore.

Never watched any of the Law and Order shows, but they're in their twentieth for the original, I believe? I mean, that's absurd.

Supernatural, we managed to dvr every season up to the final, via reruns, then dvr'd the final season as it was shown. We're still in season 13, we dvr'd it 3 years ago now. Heh. but yes, I can see how people would be wanting it to just end around season 5 or even 10. They definitely milked it for everything they could. (Scoobynatural was funny though.)

This! I mean, look at all the Shonen Jump stuff like One Piece and Bleach (the latter long ended in the crazy year that was 2016 but it stretched out and it was literally a zombie after the Hueco Mundo arc. Plus, too many asspulls here and there that robbed the series from its former glory). If the death of Kentaro Miura and Togashi's health problems have taught us: things shouldn't run that long because it could literally break someone as human beings to meet the demands of merchandising and popularity worldwide. Both series should have taken the Demon Slayer route: end it when it feels necessary (KnY ended last year). If a new fan were to jump into One Piece, for example, they're going to get old and move on to new things/big pastures and not care to read 1000+ pages or watch the anime (fillers and all).

Every time I see names/titles like this I have to think of the absolute derision younger fanfic writers are met with if they use the "pick a word I think is cool from a Japanese dictionary and use it as a name" and gratuituous use of strewn in badly translated faux-Japanese and like... at least they have the excuse to be young and accordingly ignorant - what's the excuse of the grown adults in those development teams?

I low-key shipped Helios/Mamoru in the 90s anime, lol. I was like, six, so I didn't even know what I was doing, but I wanted Helios to stick around and have him interact with Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru, rather than Chibiusa.
