IDK, my hatred for 1st person in fanfic is more of a vague mistrust when it come to original fiction. And as much as there are things I find annoying about how a lot of white men write fiction, I've read way too much good fiction written by white men to feel comfortable talking smack about white men's writing as a whole.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-16 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I can only stand fic written in first person if the source material is a book that was also written in first person, otherwise it's an automatic nope at this point. I've tried and never found even one fic I liked.

You know what? I believe you.

I gotta wonder who’s a white man here. For instance, do you not like books by Italians?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-16 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
what

(Anonymous) 2021-06-16 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I will never get over how Italians were Not White until people arbitrarily decided they were a couple years ago, race is such a made up construct.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
White dudes do not need you to whiteknight for them.

First person is an instant turn off for me, even in a book that is supposed to be good. First person just really doesn't work for me as a writing style.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-16 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a white male but I generally prefer books written by white males, so I'm going to have to submit the exact opposite secret and add in a little ageism on top of my racism and sexism.

Any book written by a Millennial white female is likely to be the worst written, most self-indulgent, barely-disguised pornography and/or self-insert, and fanfiction-infused writing ever. Avoid at all costs.

I don't remotely understand why people dislike first person POV. Any POV is good if it's done well; any POV is bad if it's done badly.

I'm not going to touch the first part of your comment. For me, for some reason with first person I can't immerse myself in a story the same way I can with third person. The world of the book feels less real to me. I don't mind first person in nonfiction. But in fiction, it has to be third person for me. Just a personal preference. I don't think first person is inherently bad, I just don't enjoy it.

(Cozy Werewolf Anon)

-points at 2nd paragraph- Okay? Our books aren't written for you.

Since so many people read/write fan fiction, calling something "fan fiction infused" isn't precisely an insult. There is a ton of great fan fiction out there. It's written for a specific audience as audiences change what styles they like to read over time. If it doesn't jive with you, that's fine.

Doesn't mean it's "worst written." And dear god, where else can I go to punch a bad guy self-indulgently if not in my books? Not everything has to be high art. Thank goodness.

You just described 90% of writing by white men, especially classics involving romance AKA why I hated AP English.

First person POV is my favorite (in profic, not fanfic), so your guidelines probably won't be very helpful for me. I usually read the first twenty pages and, if it doesn't grab me, I'll read the ending. If I don't like the ending, chances I won't enjoy reading the book.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Having finished reading a pretty terrible first-person novel by a woman last night, I think you may be onto something.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
(Cozy Werewolf Anon)

And I'm going to add if you're on the 'zon, check to see how many books they are publishing in a year. If they are publishing 4 a year, they probably need more editing.

1st POV can be done well. I mean, it's the POV of adult Urban Fantasy, it has to be edited well. Like, present tense has to be edited well.

As primarily a SFF reader, I find a lot of books written by white men highly uncomfortable. (oh the things I've seen) On the other hand, a lot of books written by white women include a lot of abuse and rape too so... you can't really win? This is err.. why I started writing my own books.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
First person POV is super common in mystery fiction, which is my favourite genre, so I don't see the problem with it. I also tend to read mostly female authors, but again, mystery fiction.

Everyone should read Eden Robinson's Trickster Trilogy, though. Written by an Indigrnous woman, in third person, about a kid whose biological father turns out to be, well, a trickster. Chaos ensues. It's wonderful.

I love first-person when it's average-written or above, for instance I think the Hunger Games was compelling, and I think it would have been less compelling in both themes and effect if it were written in third. So I can't agree with you that they're all terrible. But I'm probably one of few who disagree (I do agree that very few people know how to effectively use first-person, so I don't think it's the worst filtering criterion).

I prefer books by women, but just like books made by men, quality depends on the imprint, not the gender. I also prefer books made by poc, but that too depends on imprint and not race. Usually the imprints or blurbs tell me the quality there too, so I don't have to investigate bios, lmao.

Are all authors putting pictures out there enough for you to think the bio tells you enough to determine white maleness? Does the summary tell you first-person? I don't know, these details make me think troll secret or you're only scrolling self-published stuff.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
I find it fascinating how many people ITT obsess about the race and gender of the authors in question as if that was the be-all and end-all of the quality of writing when it's really not.
But maybe I'm just not used to fanatically look up the race (and in some unisex name cases the gender) of an author all the time just so I can have some sweet, sweet kick of confirmation bias.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if anyone ever trolls r/menwritingwomen with passages written by women by simply changing the author's name to a male one. I've read so many books you could do it with.

Wait, then they'd just say female authors write like that because they read too many male authors and have been brainwashed into dehumanizing themselves, poor things.

It isn't really hard to glance at the author's bio at the back of the book, see yet another middle-aged dude, and decide to pick up something from someone who has a different perspective instead.

I never really pay attention to author names, unless it's someone I've heard of. All I really care about is whether the book sounds interesting and has a good story. In saying that though, if I look on my shelves, the majority I own are written by men (white or otherwise), so take from that what you will.

I can read first person in books, but in fanfic I just don't like it for some reason.
