Going to write author's notes like that all the time now, just because it annoys you so much specifically.

It's not even so much that you feel that way, it's the way you said it. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I feel this comment.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Lmao Love it.

epic own

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah this person sounds like a real snot.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I like playlists and music recs if it's something unusual that really fits the characters and setting or something that shows the writer really knows and cares about music and took time to choose something that really enhances the story.

If it's the same generic pop songs that are hits right now that everybody is quoting whether it fits or not, then nah.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
To each their own. I love author’s notes, especially the music reccs.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been mulling over adding the songs I listened to over and over again while writing my fic. I didn't think anyone would honestly be interested. But your comment (and the obnoxious OP) has made me reconsider.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I love author's notes, too! I rarely check out the music recs, but that's mainly just because I'm one of those people who can't read/write while listening to audio with words in it. I certainly never begrudge music recs, though.

Does anybody else remember the short period of the LJ era where authors would do "audio commentary" for their fics? Like they would repost the entire text of the fic but their commentary would be interspersed throughout the text in bold or in a different color or something? I loved that and wish it had caught on more (and I say that as someone who never wrote much and therefore was mostly just reading other people's audio commentaries, not doing my own).

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say I've every felt much of anything over author's notes, I just kind of skim them and then mostly forget about it while reading the fic.

The one exception was a writer who at the end of the fic went on a massive tangent about how much they hated the canon+one of the characters they had just written about, which subsequently put me off ever reading their fic for that fandom again and made me retract both the comment and kudos I was going to leave. But that's it. Otherwise I don't really pay much attention to them.

I know plenty of people out there feel the same way as OP, but tbh, this attitude always seems low-key misanthropic to me. Like, “Grrrr, people getting their peopleness on the fanfic they’ve put their heart into and are now posting free of charge, grrrr, why must people constantly force me to be peripherally aware of their person-ness.”

It is not hard to ignore author’s notes. If the mere fact that they exist bothers you, that seems like more of a you issue. (Not saying you're omgabadperson!! for feeling this way, just that it seems like you're easily bothered by other people's peopleness.)

And because someone’ll probably try it: No, this is not a self-defense. My own A/N tend to be minimal.

I ... kinda know what you mean? At a certain point it gets to be like those recipe blogs where they tell you about their really horrible day and then some childhood anecdotes before finally getting to the recipe.

Fortunately sticking mostly to my tiny fandoms I don't run into that much, and I can skip it if I do, but I am wary of doing that myself, which is why I restrict my pre-story notes to things like "Title taken from [song] by [artist]. Written for [occasion]. Originally written in [year] but edited [year] for reasons." Or possibly on chapters, "This is where [warning] comes into effect."

Any personal notes or brief explanations of creative choices come after the fic, so the fic can speak for itself and then people can either go on about their business or read a little more insight if they choose. And even then I always feel like maybe it's too much and I shouldn't editorialize at all. But well... if I think so on someone else's fic, I can skip it, and if someone else thinks so on mine, they can skip it. Not offended if they do, they're here for the story.

Okay.

I have gotten rid of author's notes before, but usually only when they are something that has become obsolete (like something at the end of chapter 6 that says when chapter 7 and 8 are expected to be posted for a fic that is complete with all 11 chapters posted). But I'm not sure why this is really that soothing to you, unless that when those notes are there you feel you have to read them and it throws you out of the story, in which case I sort of understand as I sometimes feel a compulsive need to read everything on a page or I can't move on.

I love author's notes, including music recs AND character decisions, but I confess that "wow I got so much attention" ones annoy me if they keep going after three chapters. It feel less like a sincere reaction and more like some social obligation to be humble or a strategy to garner more readers, which admittedly is my hangup.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
idk i find authors notes fun, like where else can you get the absolute joy of someone going on a long-winded rant about correct characterization and story-building only for their fic to not only get the character names wrong, but also over-use epithets to a staggering degree. you can't buy that level of fantastic cognitive dissonance.

plus the rest of the time i kind of love it when writers put in an amusing anecdote about something they were researching for the fic or a music rec for the tone of it, it's a nice little touch.

Ok?

Author’s notes are for the readers who give a shit about me as a human being. Some of them do. If you only want a fic-dispensing gumball machine, they’re not for you.

I write a lot of history-heavy fics, so I tend to include LONG author's notes at the end talking about my sources and such. In one fic I actually linked to an entire damn meta essay I wrote about my headcanon for the HP Magical World's history in WWI. I haven't gotten any complaints about my author's notes, but I'm sure I've annoyed people. Can't say I particularly plan on changing my thing though.

I've only ever done the music thing once, and it was linking to a queer punk/riot grrl playlist in a fic that went into punk history in some detail. Kinda cringe, but I'm a cringe person.

playlist?

Notes don't bother me much. Fic is free?

The best one I ever saw was a fic for a rare pair and the author linked to some other fics they liked with that pairing. Awesome.

Related to the bonus secret, that's how I feel but with tags. The more tags a fic has attached to it, the more likely it sucks in my personal experience. Consistently it's the fics with only a max of three or four tags on AO3 that are the most well written.

Well, I'll agree with you totally. I can't stand the author's notes that go on for paragraphs about being so surprised, or explaining plot points, or talking about what we just read, or congratulating themselves on such an evil cliffhanger.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-18 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I do this if a really good but long multi chapter fic has notes that cancel out reader view on my iPad. I can’t read AO3 without it but it’s totally random if notes will bork it or not. Otherwise I don’t care about the notes as they’re so often obviously directed at the author’s social circle and I really don’t see anything wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-18 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remove the author notes, but I agree to a certain point about some of them when the author notes are things unrelated to the story. For example, I don't need to know about your in real life stuff to enjoy your fic, especially if I am reading the fic a loooong time after you wrote it. The three paragraph "sorry it's late but..." is usually pretty irrelevant three years later.

Flashbacks to when I was posting on ff.net in the early 00s and using authors notes like a livejournal. What a wild time.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree with your bonus secret, because ime the longest author's notes are historical research notes, which generally (but not always) indicate that the author's really making an effort to write good fic.

Agreed on the annoyingness of all other author's notes, though. I have trouble ignoring them because what if they're actually saying something important or interesting? But most of the time they're not, and they just spoil my immersion in the story.
