Re: Feeling old/I can't stand this shit (secret 6 inspired?)

I couldn't agree more. The thought of ever having to go back to how it was before AO3 is shudder-inducing. A huge part of it is the immense functionality and ease-of-use of the platform. But also, it's the only huge, multi-fandom fanfic platform that's ever made me feel completely at home as an adult in fandom. I spent a few years skulking around FFN as a teen, but these days whenever I try venturing onto FFN or, god forbid, Wattpad, I just can't deal with the overwhelming feeling of "I'm too old for this crap." (And I don't mean the fics themselves when I say "crap," I mean the entire thing, the whole place and how it functions.)

IDK, I realize that some adult fans really love FFN and it's their fannish home, and I don't actually want to insult those people, even though what I'm saying is objectively kind of insulting to them I guess. Sorry, FFN-lovers, I don't mean to insult you personally, please pay me no mind.

In regards to longtime adult fans still hanging out on FFN (of which I am not one), I wonder if it might be just that... well. I will admit to being set in my ways and sometimes just not wanting to try new things. Like with my work in web development, frequently the younger employees are like "hey I found out about this cool new way to do X" and I'm like "orrrrr I could just code it by hand in Notepad without hardly thinking about it."

But sometimes the younger employees are right and it turns out to be a good idea once I get past the initial "but I can do the same thing without these extra steps/software" phase.

I wonder if some of those longtime fans just did not want to figure out all the ins and outs of AO3, because FFN had always served them well enough, and it was familiar. "Don't need any fancy stuff in order to read text" etc. Since fanfiction is just a hobby rather than a profession, there was no real impetus for them to try. And if they're content where they're at, well, cool.

AYRT - Yeah, as someone whose main email address is Hotmail, still, in 2021, I can't exactly act like I'm soooo above neglecting digital/technological evolution.

Also, from what I gather, there are certain fandoms and/or pairings that just have way more content on FFN than they do on AO3, and having seen how little content AO3 has for the vast majority of het ships, I don't find that hard to believe.

Personally, even if I got into a ship that had way more content on FFN than it had on AO3, I don't know if I'd be able to bring myself to go back to FFN for content. I just have such a visceral Nope response to the place at this point. But as you said, if other people are content there, that's cool, good for them.
