You're right, no one will be hit by a car. It's just a nasty thought/expression. But it's also completely unnecessary, and I think that tends to be a toxic combo. And in my case, I'm tired of nasty shit that didn't need to be shared with the world. I would probably guess someone posting stuff like that is of a younger age though. I hope.

I mean, I'm sure in most cases, a person is just blowing off steam. And we all have our graceless moments. But words still have impact, and saying you want to hit someone with your car puts a certain image in the listener's head (yes, even if you include IF): one of a person being physically hit, maybe run over or possibly even killed, by a vehicle. It's meant to upset. It implies that having a bad ship (a ship the person disapproves of) that is entirely fictional, is just as *bad* as having a desire to murder a real person with your car. Which is completely ridiculous. It's also suggesting that the life of a real person has just about as much worth as a fictional "bad ship."

But they're just words! Said with IF! Didn't even say they would! Just if they said they wanted to! Hypothetical! Therefore, no problem, right? Again, the purpose of saying something like that is to upset a person because they ship something that the other individual doesn't like. That's why you're upset by it. That's the intent. It's nasty, and it's thoughtless, and preceded with an if statement because that's the coward's way of taking shots at someone while leaving just enough room to accuse that someone of being way too sensitive if they take offense.

Now, I will admit I'm too sensitive, but that doesn't the other person isn't also being insensitive.

But I'll add I also don't know the original context of the post and could be wrong. It's entirely possible the person is being facetious, or being quoted out of context.

I guess that was a longwinded way to say, yes, it's not a death threat but can still be upsetting, and I don't think anyone is wrong to feel upset if they read something like that. But they might be wrong if they fire back with their own hypothetical situation involving death/harm and the real person they're addressing.

TL;DR: agreed it's not a death threat, but it's not wrong to feel upset by it

But I have no doubt in my mind that a not-insignificant number of people who say "I want to hit you with my car" would laugh and celebrate openly if the other person were to happen to be hit by a car soon afterwards. They've done as much when their bullying and doxxing has caused attempted suicides and outed people in countries where you can get the death penalty for being gay.
