Re: Based on 1
(Anonymous) 2021-06-19 04:25 am (UTC)(link)I winced my way through one performance of the restaged tour and yeah, no thanks. It turns out if the staging emphasizes the Phantom being a violent dickbag (I mean, he absolutely is but the original staging can still wring sympathy out of me) and Raoul is a shouty dismissive asshole, I start rooting for Christine to ditch both of them like in the 1943 movie.
Saw an awesome production of Rocky Horror where they provided the audience with prop bags with newspaper and lighter-shaped flashlights and stuff, the set was awesome, and (don't kill me) the singers were way better than the film version. I wish they could've done a recording. I did see Tim Curry live in Spamalot though, which was hilarious.
But the hardest I've ever laughed at a show was probably a tie between a touring production of Young Frankenstein--The Producers is great and a better show, but-- and the London production of Jerry Springer: The Opera. Idk if I'd laugh as hard now, in the aftermath of Trump's presidency and his exhorting white supremacy, but when the KKK started tap dancing I laughed so hard I wheezed and started crying. Also, Every Last Motherfucker Should Go Down is an awesome song.
My favorite "no one's ever heard of it" show was a musical version of The Ugly Duckling called Lucky Duck where the big bad wolf was a talent scout and the duckling was a singer. Runner up to the Lord of the Rings musical that was performed at Comic Con one year.
Dammit, I miss live theatre.
