I don't get the encouraged parasocial band relationships

I'm confused as how you see this as strictly a chinese/korean thing. Does no one remember NSYNC? BSB? NKOTB? One Direction?

But Korean (not sure if Chinese are the same way), have the social contract where singers are strictly controlled in ways where they can't even have boyfriends/girlfriends because it would take away their perceived availability by fans. Literally every part of their life in controlled to make them more appealing.

Sure, American boy bands have their image controlled but as far as I could tell, they could date freely, drink, etc.

Western boygroups (and girlgroups) in the 90s and 2000s absolutely had the exact same restrictions on openly dating etc. to avoid "disappointing" fans etc. - that was always a huge part of the critcism of the genre.

Different groups might have had different rules/contracts but there very much were several groups that weren't allowed to openly date or come out at the height of their popularity.

Come out is very different than being able to date. That was just period typical homophobia.

Which groups? Because I was a teen in the 90s and I remember all kinds of dating scandals.

Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears want to know what the hell you're talking about. Because there was no similar dating restriction, and that was absolutely not what any of the criticism of Western boybands was about.

I worked in the music industry in the 90s. They absolutely did not have restrictions like that. The level of image marketing stopped at, as the Simpsons made fun of, the bad boy/the hot one/the sad one personas.

Never mind that the fans didn't care if they were dating. I overheard fans in line for autographs literally discussing which already married members of the bands were going to marry them when they grew up. Shit's always been fucked up but let's not invent problems that weren't there.

With the exception of 1D, the rest of those came into existence before social media which has made parasocialism way worse.

I can't speak to any comparisons beyond that though.
