Re: What are some fandom things you just don't get?
(Anonymous) 2021-06-21 02:32 am (UTC)(link)Idk how right anon below me with the anti-Christian screed gets right; it's one problem I have with the people who think antis are just another manifestation of Christian purity culture. Not only am I not Christian, I wasn't even raised as one. My parents dgaf about church and when I told my mom I didn't want to tag along to Sunday school with my neighbors because my one experience freaked me out (and I freaked them out by having no clue what Hell was) I never went back. I've only set foot in churches since for a) art and b) funerals.
I had a religious paternal grandmother but I never heard or absorbed a single thing about sex, sexuality, or anything much more than "feed the hungry, clothe the poor" from her.
There probably are people that bring religious baggage into fandom, but your take is much closer to my experience.
Re: What are some fandom things you just don't get?
(Anonymous) 2021-06-21 05:39 am (UTC)(link)What it does mean is that a lot of antis are coming from a puritanical American pov, which is founded on extreme Christian ideology. Again, not a 1:1 link but it sort of feeds into the same thing. Western culture, especially in English speaking countries, has been built on certain kinds of religious backgrounds. You have the Victorians and Evangelicals and all these other groups who have historically said sex is bad, thinking about sex is bad, reading about anything that isn't ideal and pure and good for your soul is bad, and if you do any of these things then you are a filthy pervert who is going to hell (or should be in prison, or should be shunned from society, etc).
So no, not all antis were raised in puritan religious households. And not all people who agree with some of their points are either. But all anti arguments have been built on this same foundation of belief that what you read and watch and fantasise about reflects your own morals and ideals, and being around that stuff will corrupt your mind and the minds of our children
