I'm not usually happy about the anime adaptations either unless they're Doukyuusei levels amazing.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-26 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Given was pretty good, but Hitorijime My Hero and Love Stage were kinda weird.

Doukyuusei was the one shooting star that got a loving treatment that made it amazing, the stranger in the shore looks promising too but doukyuusei was truly something else.

The first live action adaptation of a BL manga I saw was for Seven Days, which was pretty good. Anything else I've tried has basically turned me off live action BL adaptations, so I feel your pain, OP.

I feel the same about most manga adaptations, except I did enjoy the Bride of the Water God drama and the Goblin King one too.

I unironically enjoyed the Bleach live-action movie that Netflix did a few years back, it was kinda terrible but it hit the right level of goofy for me to have fun with it.

NAYRT But I liked the Bleach movie too. It was fun.

AYRT

Okay, might watch this. I caught bits of the live action Dragon Ball and just sat there amazed lol. Is it similar?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah see I also unironically enjoyed the Dragon Ball movie because it was so bad I was laughing the entire time. But tbh I think the Bleach movie is at least a little better,
Like it's didn't hit cringe levels for me that DB did and I think the actors do a decent job given the premise. It's obviously not a Masterpiece or amazing cinema, but I think it's a fun watch overall. Also I really quite liked the fight-scenes in the Bleach movie too, they were stylish and imo better than the early anime fights.

Oh really? Guess I'll give it a try, I've been kind of nostalgic for the early days of Bleach.

Lol That poor cat looks so pissed. Anyway, I feel you. I watched the live action movie for Love Stage after finishing the anime and it made me cringe so hard. Especially the bit where Ryouma's stealing kisses from Izumi.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen many live-action adaptation of manga, but in general I agree. Second on the cat looking so pissed lol.

They say of the Acropolis (where the Parthenon is)...

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh bollocks, wrong comment thread, feel free to mock me.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
What do they say, what do they say, what do they say?

so it isn't just western animation that gets turned into shitty live action movies, anime gets that too?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
yep, they tapped out that market and moved to anime. some are actually made and planned for Japan! which is an odd market as it is, given that most adaptations go manga > anime > stage show +/- cafes with actors and never reach movie but after Bleach and Death Note I guess they think it's a thing now.

I've only seen one or two and they're mediocre at best, like you just wanted to see if they could adapt the characters' looks (costumes and wigs) to live action without CGI and that's fun to a point. sure, stage shows do too but there's a difference in formatting, plus on the actor side, most stage shows are musicals so the actors at least try to sing at some point. it's weird harmless fun. However, netflix has decided to throw money at US directors/rewriters to make anime adapations and I'm not down with that in any sense at all. I actually shudder to think what they'll do to One Piece, it's going to be awful. The US version of live Death Note was terrible, not a single redeeming thing about it.

Yep, happens with anime and manga too. Out of all the live action movies I've seen based on anime, the Rurouni Kenshin ones were easily the best. All the other ones ranged anywhere from "not good, but entertaining" and "what were they thinking?". I'll be forever annoyed that Absolute Boyfriend got turned into a boring drama that had very little in common with the manga.
