Safe to say EVERYONE is fairly baffled and annoyed by this. I'm kinda feeling sorry for the guy they DID chose to play Wentworth.

Hah, I am a little sorry for the other actor even with my great disappointment.

The article really emphasized Henry Golding's presence and left the actual Wentworth last.

Thank you for making my secret!

(Anonymous) 2021-06-26 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I was disappointed, too! I thought for sure he'd be Wentworth. :-/ That said, the overall casting and general buzz I've heard about this adaptation doesn't sound like it's going to be my cup of tea, anyway.

Anne's description wasn't promising for how the movie would handle the adaptation yep - but I would definitely have watched it he was Wentworth.

I got the impression they were going to go for a more modern interpretation and... that's just not what interests me. Especially if they're going to alter Anne's personality to do it.

I would recommend the Sally Hawkins adaption, but the kiss at the end completely ruins it for me.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
How did they describe her?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities."

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
DA but wow I hope that's just them blatantly lying to make audiences interested because she's basically the opposite of that and audiences don't like historical female characters whose flaws are that they play too much into what was expected of a woman of the time period.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but that was what turned me off the adaptation. I read that description and thought... no? That's... not who Anne Elliot is at all? I just think, why bother to call it an adaptation of Persuasion if you didn't really want to use the main character?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
DA My thoughts exactly.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
This is the reaction that I've seen everybody have, and I had it too, despite Persuasion being...not my favourite Austen book.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Idk, he looks like he'll be a very excellent Mr Elliot to me. You need someone who can pull off handsome, suave, and charming to fill that role

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody's questioning whether or not you he'd be a good Mr. Elliot, though. People are disappointed that he doesn't have a larger role as the romantic lead.

I understand everyone's disappointment, and I think this version is going to be, well not Persuasion, but at the same time...I kinda think that Wentworth should only be second-hottest. I think visually an audience has to understand that Wentworth does not have the overwhelming social boons that sometimes make up for an economic and honorable lack (like that of a Wickham). In visual media, this can be told by the comparable hotness of the love interests.

Will still probably watch this, but also looking forward to the one with Sarah Snook from Succession.

I liked the one with Ciaran Hinds as Wentworth. He was dashing in his own way but not conventionally handsome. The Elliot they had in that was a pretty boy but really smarmy, which I thought was perfect.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That version converted me into a Ciaran Hinds stan lol.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
He was wonderful as Wentworth. I'm always sad to not see him in more stuff!

Yes, dashing but with some maturity on him v. pretty boy mercenary!

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, dashing with some maturity and some gravitas. That's it exactly. Rupert Penry-Jones was good but just didn't fit quite as well as Ciaran Hinds did for me. :)

It really feels like they should have switched Rupert and Tobias at least, imo.
