Heat-Wave Related Woes, Rants, Raves(?), Experiences

As the title says. IDK if a bunch of this has already been shared in the "How was your day" thread, but I feel like a thread of its own might not be amiss.

The Dallas area is both hotter and more humid than San Antonio was. And my skin is not happy. I haven't had acne this bad in a while (and showing up in so many places), and I can't get it to go away. Very frustrating.

I'm menopausal and have hot flashes that get worse when I get too hot, so having a hot flash ON TOP OF being an already sweaty, sticky, miserable bitch really fucking sucks. Fuck menopause symptoms and fuck global warming too while we're at it.

That sounds really miserable. So sorry, nonny. Weather and hormones are not a great combination. For me, not menopausal, but I get freezing cold for several days before and then during when I would have had my period. No matter how hot it is, I'll have winter clothes on and feel miserable in the air conditioning. It was not fun this past winter, which was unusually cold for Texas.

It’s 36/87 degrees in my house rn. Last night at 1 AM it was 33/91 in my bedroom. We have no fan, either, so there is no airflow, so it feels ever hotter. We got rid of it at some point, and by the time we realized we no longer had it, every fan in a fifteen mile radius was sold out.

I slept on the couch last night because it was like two degrees cooler there, but our couch is leather and way too firm for me, so I could barely sleep there either.

Tonight I am sleeping on the deck. I bought an air mattress, and I cleared a space. It’s happening. I am afraid of spiders but fuck it, the spiders can have me if it means I get some sleep.

Also, I’m the anon with the sever, life-long sleep disorder, and all of this is happening while I’m a month and a half into my (so far oddly successful) attempt to regulate my FUBAR Circadian rhythm. So the entire thing is just, like, layers of chaotic weirdness all the way down.

I was doing pretty well with going to bed at 2:30AM(ish) and getting up at 10AM (which is a full four hours before those things usually occur for me. And that whole thing was feeling downright revolutionary in terms of the change it was making in my day to day life. And then the universe went, “Okay, but what if you just couldn't sleep...at all? What then? Let’s find out!”

Also, my building had a fire alarm go off today, because a heat sensor on the roof got too hot, or something. So we hung out in the cool, dark entrance to the parking garage for half an hour while the firemen came.

Everything feels like a snow day, except the opposite, and considerably more surreal.

That sounds awful. I'm so sorry. We've had the opposite problem here. My mom is keeping the aircon so cold that I've been wearing winter pajamas to bed.

It is kind of awful. But it's also just so surreal and odd that I'm not fully miserable about it. If it weren't for my strong desire (need, really) to stick to my sleep disorder treatment plan, I'd probably be enjoying the experience, just because it's so weird and I've always liked weird experiences that disrupt normal life.

SA - Also, sorry about your mom. That seems really selfish and unfair to you to not be willing to compromise on the AC temperature.

Spiders are too busy catching bugs to worry about you. Good luck - I hope you get some rest!

Our zucchini and tomato plant died because of the combination of heat and hot wind. The two combined killed our plants on Thursday. :(

Yeah, especially since our other vegetables (bell pepper and squash) are not doing to great to begin with. This year has just not been a good year for our plants.

Oh no! I'm hoping our plants don't meet the same fate.

Thanks. We only got one zucchini off of it before the wind storm. :(

Here in Michigan I was annoyed last week because I'd had the AC on for a month, and then it looked like I was going to have to turn the heat back on.

The heat wave hasn't gotten here yet, but it's back up to the temps of a week ago, so I suppose it's imminent. At the moment we're dealing with the aftermath of a few days of torrential rain and flooding. I'm not personally affected much, very glad my basement has never had a leakage problem and I mostly stay at home. The park near my house is a lake though, hahah.

It hit 112F today and there are fires everywhere.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-28 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
The air quality sucks. It finally rained hard at one point one day last week after nothing but very rare showers for over a year and it's like it never happened. We had a record-breaking year in 2020 (by a lot):
Most days at 95º or more: 172 this year. Old record was 166 in 1989.
Most days at 100º or more: 145 this year. Old record was 143 days in 1989.
Most days at 105º or more: 102 this year. Old record was 87 in 2002.
Most days at 110º or more: 53 this year. Old record was 33 in 2011.
Most days at 115º or more: 14 days this year. Old record was 7 days in 1974.
Most days with lows at 90º or more: 28 days this year. Old record was 15 in 2013.

I feel like we might break some these again this year (I think we have already had 6 days over 115F so far) and I do not want that.

And yet people keep doing nothing about climate change. :(

It was over a hundred degrees today and it's only gonna get hotter. I have blinds and blackout curtains to keep the house cool without turning on the AC (we only turn it on at night because the bill gets scary high if we turn it on during the day), but the heat still seeps in. Heat makes me sleepy, but I can't sleep because it's too hot. I can't go on walks either because it's already warm in the morning and it stays warm and humid until well after nine. I just hate summer so much and I'm seriously considering shaving my head because my hair's a frizzy mess thanks to the humidity.

It's so horrible. I've always hated summer but this year is a nightmare. Barely held back bile at work from overheating a few days ago even with working AC. I can't imagine how awful it is for everyone without it.

The hills and mountains look unusually crispy too this year which is worrisome ala fire season. Two years ago the hill behind my apartment caught on fire and wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it happens again soon.
